Okay, I did some digging. The quote currently in
question became public when China's Minister of
Propaganda gave a speech (1956) in which he
proclaimed that as China rose as a great and
powerful society, arts, culture and science would
become liberated to achieve yet to be known great
results. So - they had 'spin' then too. The roots of
the quote go back to a poem by Tennyson -
Victorian era. If you want the specific poem - go
nuts, he wrote volumes, and let me know the one
when you find it. In one shape, form or another,
that line has been used endlessly by Politicians,
Academics, etc. A few I found - Churchill, Kennedy
and in a kind of lost in translation way - Gandhi.
Were they all commies too? Let's turn this around
for a second. Suppose I asked Harper "What in the
hell are we doing in Afghanistan?" and he
responded - "Let some Flowers bloom - let
Democracy flourish", would that make Harper a
Maoist, or perhaps a true Statesman? Folks, this is a
non issue - concentrate on what is important,
    delete what is not.

Okay rockpile, I'm game. Lets see some links to the folks you mention using the phrase, " Let some flowers bloom".

Oh, and if Harper had used the phrase? Give me a break. You guys would be nailing him to a cross right now.

Fran, start googling like I did. Pick up a history
book or two. I warn you, it won't be fast and clean.
I'm not picking on Harper over anyone else, just
pointing out how ridiculous this whole distraction
is. The Churchill quote referred to leaves springing
forth in the spring, triumphing over Hitler's darkest
hours of attempted occupation. Kennedy used the
phrase in a speech to invigorate the potential of a
new and bold America to show the world a new
vision for the future. As for Tennyson's original, I
thought I might find it in his poem "The Lotus
Eaters", but it wasn't there. And quite frankly Fran, I
don't do links because the information highway is
pretty much bastardized, and you can find whatever
you want to hear as long as you look hard enough.
So, do it the old fashioned hard way. And check it
out twice. BTW, if Harper would have answered my
question as I posted it - I would have been quite
impressed. I'm beginning to think you are paranoid
delusional, cooped up too long, with a substantial
amount of learning, but with the simplistic world
view of say, the Movie 'Taxi Driver'. Prozac might
            help!

Sorry, but not providing any proof and then insulting me doesn't cut it. You make the claim, you have to prove it not me.

Mustard, you already think Harper is a dictator regardless of what he says or does.

And now for another great moment with the Iggster.

Some say he was channeling the parachute club. Some say he was channeling Howard Dean. Me, I say he was channeling a Viagra commercial here. But then again, SOME claim that I'm a "delusional paranoid".

Sorry Fran, didn't realize your Commodore doesn't
have a browser. I'll go back and do it if I find the
time. But first, I have to go to Walmart and buy a
                    chalkboard.
But fess up, are you really for spending 30 billion
on jet fighters ( with no engines), 6 billion for
prisons for unreported criminals because most of
them are appointed to the Senate, 2 billion on a
photo op, etc, etc, and no discussion of Agri policy?
You assume I'm for one of the other goons. How
did you draw that conclusion? I would like to see a
wipeout for all of them and see a whole new slate.
You ARE paranoid delusional. Seen them black
helicopters lately? I have! They're coming for us!!!
And my nightmares have Stevie, Iggy, Jackie and
Gilles each flying an Apache with the laser sights
right on my chest. Unless I cough up a buck
                    seventy.

Well there's a mouthful to cap off the weekend.

Lets take them one at a time.

                      - You have a statement without fact on the blooming flowers. It is quite obvious that Iggy was quoting Mao, and not Churchill, or Gandhi, or whoever else you might dream up next. Yeah, maybe somebody used the line before Mao. But you know what, all sorts of people used the Swastika before the Nazi's did, including Buddhists. Put one on the bumper of your truck and good luck to you explaining to people that you're a Buddhist.

If it doesn't bother you that Iggy used a quote that is most famously associated with Mao Zedong, thats fine. It does however bother me.

-On the jets, I consider that one a non-issue. We need new jets, our current ones are obsolete and a national embarrassment. If anything we should probably be buying more of them than we all ready are.

-Yes, I'm all for building more prisons. We have too many criminals walking the streets and under, ahem, "house" arrest.

                      - Ag Policy? The Conservatives at least talked about the biggest problem, the CWB in their party platform. The Libs didn't mention anything.

                      - Hey I'd like to see a better slate of candidates too. Personally the second coming of Margret Thatcher would do the trick for me. But the reality is we've got to choose from the ones we've got. And while Harper hasn't impressed me, Ignatieff has impressed me even less.

Looking at the polls right now, when all is said and done, Iggy might not do any better than Dion in this election. And Dion could barely speak english.
