    Hiring Help

Seems to be next to impossible to hire harvest help. In the past my brother and I have ran 2 combines over 6,000 acres with no trucker.

Now with more acres and combines we would like to hire a cart operator but very little domestic interest.

Should have stayed at less acres.

Same everywhere, OLD farmers are running out, young won't, imports WRECK stuff...

Glad I'm NOT in that game, after 55 years...good luck.

A retired farmer might be your best bet but I hear most don't want to work harder(more and longer hours) than they did for themselves.

We have been 9,000 acres for almost 15 years. Both my brother and I are getting to the point where we would like to get another hand so we don't have to giver as hard. But definitely easier said than done.

Not many recently retired farmers around here that want to stay operating. Six week harvest is too much commitment for them. Like to find a traveling Aussie or European.

          Thats a pace.
          220 ac a day avg?
          Wish we could do that.
          Im gonna run a 690 a 680 and a 9080 this fall just to chew thru 4000.

How long of a fall do you get and you haul your own grain?

          Must be in texas,

Ha. No. Used to be 2 of us, now 4. My son is farming and have had the same hired man for 14 years.

3 - 780s combines and would like to run a cart as well. Don't need another full time hired man, just for harvest. We run slower than most, but our fields show it. No green volunteers. We just go what conditions allow.

But we aren't special. Local bto does 5,000 ac per combine and another does 7,000. I just don't want to work that hard anymore.

When we did 6,000 acres it was with 2 - 9600 John Deeres. Now those were long falls.

The buy of the year was those 9.9 NH’s at Richie’s a month ago , about 60% of what dealer lots were asking
we run Two with 45 ft heads on 6500 ac , no issues finishing and we never work past 11 pm
              They cover ground
keeps our crew at 4 , but everything close by within 4 miles

The outfit that keeps bees on my land use guys that speak Spanish and so does the crew that cuts our silage every year. And by the time the farmers shut down and rent out around here health issues limit them to maybe a couple of years. Local BTO uses young renegade huts after they work for him for a few years they run back to the colony and have no problem settling down.

                  I feel your pain.
Over the years have had some wrecks. Fortunately I live close to a town and have a stream of qualified traffic to ask.

                  Just a thought.
Wonder if any CA custom harvesters let their help go early enough?
                  Call Thackers for eg.
                  ???

I appreciate a cart even with one combine. Up to 20% hours savings.
I'm spread out and use two semis.
                    One driver.
                    A Class 1? Now that's hen's teeth.
