Yes. Not necessary to pay up for a 1A. Just someone with their wits about them. Not a race car driver.

Good luck. I can appreciate the finding of someone for a few weeks with a few minutes training. Especially when those three weeks can stretch over three months. The more remote the harder I imagine.

If it costs 10s of $1000s to fix, I pay the same $40 for all operators.

I'm also truly lucky that all my long term seasonal guys have 1s.
God, I'd quit if I had to go back to a fleet of tandems. Now that's racing lol, red line all day. More wages actually.
It's not the speed, it's the volume on arrival that matters.

I don’t know how much luck they have but you could try Bottom Hand Ranch Services. Maybe they have access to people who fit what you’re looking for.

Think there’d be more luck if there’s a camper or cabin available for people to use, but that just might be my mind on paper and not reality.

As for 1’s, I know a couple of farms that have invested in tandems and pups. I believe as long as the pups have electric brakes and not air brakes they can slip under a 3. (Feel free to argue that as I’m not 100% sure on it) They don’t carry quite as much as a B, but definitely get a single trailer a run for their weight.

We have accommodation available and a hot meal in the field. Not as concerned about a 1A right now. All 4 of us have it so not as big of a problem.

I will check into bottom hand. Never know when or where help may come from.

Our long term hired hand is a Mexican Mennonite. He has been with us since he was 19. My sister in law was giving my brother and I a hard time. "You better get advertising for hired help, do you think someone is just going to show up off the road?". Next day he drove in out of the blue and asked for a job. Ha.

Been with us ever since.

When I was framing houses 20 or more years ago I usually had 4 or 5 guys, I couldn’t imagine finding that many guys now that wanted a job like that working out side every day with all the extreme weather.
I once put an add with unemployment and I hired everyone that phoned, out of 34 phone calls 2 showed.
I’d try Facebook or other social media, good luck!

Several larger farms here have hired Ukraine farmers and young guys from Germany
they are awesome workers and most likely more tech savvy than most of us here .

When we had a JD sprayer demo a month ago the two tech guys were awesome and knew way more than the local JD sales guy
it was impressive
One fella from South Africa the other from Ukraine. Both knew the tech inside and out and only been here 6 months

Most immigrants will be looking at Saskjobs.ca.

I think if you go that route you need to go through like an ag exchange program or even go to their ag forums and see who’s looking to travel and do the work. (Like https://thefarmingforum.co.uk for the Brits)

If you just hire a Ukrainian off the streets now a days it’s no different than hiring anyone Canadian who doesn’t want long hours or poor weather jobs but then you’ve also got a language barrier a lot of the time.

There are a couple ranch job groups on Facebook that frequently have foreign couples and singles travelling and looking for work. Usually they’re looking for horse and cow work but sometimes you see crop experience.
