CEO of Electric company opposed to Alberta breaking away from Canada.

Shopping around for a new electricity provider. As most of you probably know Albertans need to contract with an electricity retailer for power.

Yesterday the CEO of Atco Electric Nancy Southern came out strongly against the Alberta separatist movement as being bad for business investment. I thought most business people knew better than wade into controversial issues. I for one am looking for a new electricity provider.

Actually Nancy's rant is a blessing in disguise for me. Got checking into my Atco contract and the old plan has expired and am now paying over 12 cents per KWH. They will sign you up for one to five years at a fixed or floating rate. However when that term is over you get defaulted without notification to the most expensive plan they have.

A bit of research today shows most fixed contracts at around 8 cents and floating at under 7 right now. Do any agrivillers have a recommended supplier?

I don't care what Nancy has to say, my name is on the petition. I am sure that a nation that is solvent is very good for business investment. Does ATCO do anything in a non monopolistic space? Utilities are for the most part a branch of the government.

Not sure where you are coming from ajl. I'm just saying she won't be getting any more money from me.

I don't think most people realize what a disrupter a separation or 51st state would be for government and anyone involved or benefiting from involvement with government?
The British system that has not worked well for any of the colonies would probably be replaced.
The 51 state thing would clear the table.
Don't see any strong leadership in sight to make any of that happen?

I don't think most people realize just how many businesses and how many citizens currently benefit from government largesse and don't want to disrupt that arrangement.

Absurd 5 "I don't think most people realize just how many businesses and how many citizens currently benefit from government largesse and don't want to disrupt that arrangement."
            ?
Farmers and the oil industry included!

How would the supply managed farmers in Alberta survive without state managed supply management?

Would Alberta pay all the Crop insurance premiums from the Feds?

But you still want a Canadian Passport and the CPP?

And you are going to negotiate pipeline access to tidewater with which provinces?

            Dream on discontented!

I have been on Easymax from Enmax for years but at present their contracted price is not the lowest so not the choice today. Years ago they had the best price.

If you were in Saskatchewan Moe will offer you stable regulated lower electricity rates instead of some the highest electricity prices in Canada in Alberta.

You can thank deregulation in free market Alberta for your higher electricity prices thanks to supply manipulation! (economic withholding)

Smart meters are creeping into our yards. Cheap rates are probably gone.

Actually I think the supply managed farms in AB and SK are well situated to survive without compared to counterparts in the rest of the country.

Savings in transfer payments could fund a lot of things as well.
