Any comparison between the information age we live in now in which any farmer can instantly access grain prices from anywhere on the globe, vs. the wild west pre CWB days is meaningless.

You and your buddies got enough to fill a freighter yet?
It's great to have the international prices.
But what influence does that global price information have on your ability to negotiate with the local elevator?
"Hey Pete you know Russia just sold a cargo of wheat to Egypt for this amount and I think you are short $50 cents on your offer!" I am sure Pete caves every time and ups his bid to you!
Do you sell all your inventory at the peek of the market every year because you know what the Australians or Russians are selling for?
No doubt you think that you know more than all the professional traders on their desks around the world who have access to a significant research staff and resources on the ground in every major market and producing region around the world!
All from the basement on some Alberta farm in between all the other farm work you may or may not get done!
I am betting you spend way more time on Agrisilly than you do looking at international prices and markets!
And you are just a price taker with little influence like the rest of us!

Read negative posts towards SM on Agriville constantly, maybe you can explain to me why you don't agree with SM.

Chuck, I think you have me confused with forage who claims to always sell his product at the peak of the market even though he doesn't even grow the product. I am much more humble than that, or perhaps honest is the appropriate word.
Do you know nothing about marketing in the pre-information age? When I say around the world, it is metaphorical not literal. In the good old days there was no easy, timely way to even know what the buyer 10 miles down the road was offering, let alone what the end user was paying,
From the perspective of those producers, I absolutely understand why many would have embraced the concept of the cwb. It seems many producers these days think they're being screwed by the buyers or input suppliers, even though they have all the information available to them to prove otherwise. But back in the good old days they often literally were being screwed coming and going.

One could make the same argument for organized labor. I think it served a very important role in improving the rights of blue collar workers at one time. Now it is primarily White collar workers holding the taxpayers for ransom to obtain better working conditions than most of the hard-working citizens forced to pay for their generous benefits and compensation.
My great uncle was a committed communist, and justified supporter of organized labor. He would have entered the workforce as a logger in the 1920s and 30s.
If you think there are any similarities between the working conditions the average teacher or nurse endures today versus a miner or logger of a century ago, you really need to study some history.Last edited by AlbertaFarmer5; Nov 3, 2024, 21:39.
