Friday Crop Report — Thursday edition
Middle of September. Same movie as June, just a different month.
Feels like union hours: ease through Monday to Friday, then Saturday’s overtime because it’s go time, Sunday’s double time to finish the job — and you wake up Monday to rain again and sit. That’s September in a nutshell.
Costs to grow the 2027 crop are in supersonic mode, straight up, because they can. Crop prices are higher, but with grade changes and AI trading you’re looking at losing money on almost every crop next year. Maybe it’s time every farmer worldwide said piss on it and we all find out what no inputs looks like for food production. It wouldn’t happen. Somebody would sneak supplies in for personal gain. They know we wouldn’t hold the line. In reality it would wipe the club out and people would finally see who actually supplies the food.
Little rant. I’m sick of doing yard projects instead of combining.
Crop report
Harvest is inching ahead in some areas and getting pounded in others. It’s so bad that when the sun comes out, guys are trying.
Harvest in Saskatchewan is sitting around 22% complete. Official number from the last provincial report (Sept. 1–7) was 27%, up from 18% the week before, and already miles behind the five-year average of 58%. Rain since then has stalled a lot of that.
Hard red spring and durum had a very bad week. Anyone who went was taking 18.5–21% moisture wheat off. It’s lodged, stained, some sprouting, and the falling-number game is out again. Not good. Not good at all. Swaths are worse than standing crop. Standing wheat that’s been sprayed for over 21 days is deteriorating. We’re not winning anymore.
Barley is in worse shape. It likes to grow. Early barley is coming off, later-seeded is in trouble and breaking down fast. Malt is a game they tried to play with low prices; it’s starting to climb. $6.00 is out there and it should be a lot higher if you’ve got quality off.
Lentils and peas still out there are almost salvage now. Flat, muddy crap. Not fun.
Flax — nobody’s harvesting. It isn’t quite ready.
Canary seed — a few tried. Tangled, lodged mess.
Canola is showing signs of breaking down the further it gets past desiccation date. Swaths are growing from seed that’s shelled under them. Some harvest when it dries standing, and it dries fairly fast, but it’s a slow process now that it’s a lodged, twisted mess. Yields running about 8–12 bushels below normal.
Pastures are greening up. Greenfeed had a frost scare and survived another day. Last night got cold but only to 1°.
Not much else to report. In our area the soil cracks are gone and the water table is back at full.
