Friday Crop Report — Thursday, August 27, 2026
Grains popped back this week after last week’s selloff. Don’t believe the grain companies. They wanted your canola at $15 and wheat at $7.
Weather remains mixed. Some areas took very heavy rain; others got piss all. Crops are slowly catching up.
We need this trade war to stop. Why can’t Ottawa be more like Mexico and just quietly get a deal?
Harvest
Harvest has slowly moved ahead to about 9% complete. Some areas are bone dry. Others are dealing with mud. Mud is a dud.
Wheat
HRS and durum are being shut down where fields are still light green-yellow. The crop looks decent from the road, but once you get in you soon see it didn’t grow great in the wet spots. Looks like an average crop.
Barley
Early barley is getting swathed. Heavy dew and the odd piss shower are slowing harvest. Standing barley went yesterday but still needs air in the bins to dry down. Yields are good to just above our average — plump kernels, minimal chitting. Late barley is not as good. Later-seeded greenfeed is poor.
Oats
Oats are turning or burning. Stands look thinner than last year. Only some early-seeded fields have been harvested.
Flax
Flax is in the shutdown phase and will be sprayed soon. Thinner crop than the last few years.
Peas and lentils
Still being harvested. June rains hurt them, and fields on short rotations are not doing well. Flooded areas are bad. One bright spot: well-drained pea fields that had never been in peas before did very well.
Canaryseed
In the shutdown stage. Spraying should start next week.
Canola
Changing fast. Lots will be getting swathed or shut down next week. Average at best.
Forages and pasture
Pastures are having a rough time where they were heavily grazed. Others still have a little left. First-cut hay was awesome. Very few did a second cut.
Our farm
Peas are harvested. Barley should be done by Friday night. Then we wait.
