Friday Crop Report first week of August.

Good morning, we're still waiting for that last rain to push the crop along looks like it's not coming so this year will be known as.

“ From Floods to Drought 2026”

The Crop Report.

Temps finally cooled this week after the heat took a real toll on early, mid, and late crops. Consecutive days over 30°C are hard on plants and a lot of things start happening.

Wheat & Durum

Pushed ahead and may have caught up to normal stage. Filling is underway. In moisture-rich areas it’s filling nicely; in hotter, poorer ground the seed isn’t filling to capacity. Flooded areas never recovered or were never seeded. Higher ground looks to have lower potential now. Side-hill areas are really good, and the lows are solid if they got seeded. Zero production where it never went in.

Barley

Similar story, but ripening really fast. South of me across the valley guys started swathing Monday. We’ll be next week if a five-day window opens up.

Canaryseed

Looks really good in our area — some of the best I’ve ever seen.

Lentils

Having issues. Not sure how well they podded. Lots of double spraying and yellow spots showing up. A few fields are getting shut down; more next week.

Peas

Rough start with the June rains, and the never-seeded fields still stand out. Filling took a hit on yield. We’ve got lots of pods, but seed count is showing fewer seeds per pod. Planning to spray Monday.

Chickpeas

One field looks dirty from the road, but when you walk in it podded not bad.

Flax

Looks good on most fields and is enjoying the cooler temps this week.

Oats

Early-seeded looks good. Late-seeded and greenfeed are taking a real kicking.

Canola

Early-seeded looks good. Later-seeded that was in full flower the last two weeks has blanks. We had a few hot days, though not the mid-30s they saw south of us. Canola is a funny plant — if it still has bottom leaves it might still be okay. Earliest fields in our area are starting to turn; latest seeded are just shutting down.

Pastures

Hard-grazed ones are showing it’s time to move cattle.

Hay & Forage

First-cut hay was really good, so not sure many will bother with a second cut. Some silage fields changed too fast and look like they’ll be harvested as grain instead. A few fields of greenfeed barley still look really nice.

Carry over is way over exaggerated for canola for sure as pipeline is empty, and Hrs plus Durum I'm thinking aren't that far behind. Lentils and peas have carry over.

Peas being combined in my neck of the woods. Starting on my own tomorrow , fingers crossed. All of the crops look pretty good in our area, finally ! Been a number of years that we have had a crop worth talking about on dryland in our area of the SW.

Did a NW Sask Tour yesterday
West to Lashburn along Hwy 16 , north to a NH combine clinic , then North up through St Wahlburg then back through Glaslyn to NB
Crops in general good to very good , some very late , most ok for maturity .
Delmas to Paynton will be very big as the have gotten some decent rains the past 15 days
Maidstone to north of Lashburn early crops very good
North to Wally world area good but highly variable maturity depending on seeding date . Early crops there very good .
Hay crops in that area to west of Glaslyn are phenomenal
Crops in Glaslyn area definitely late and hail battered , especially south of Glaslyn to Cochin
Home area , early crops hanging in there , only 2/10 since July 10 though . Pulse crops are all over the map , most have significant disease . A few good
In general the early canola in NW is very good, but disease really showing up in some fields now .
Cereal crops are all mostly very good
Some burnt out areas all through the drive but minimal to ridges and lots of low lying flooded areas that will be zero .
NW Sask crops will be far better than last year , but that area north was severely drought stressed last year .

1/2 the crop in that drive , crop maturity on par with normal
25% has to hurry up and 25% is very late and at high risk for frost , several canola fields still 60-70% flower
At home hailed canola maturing but still has flowers hanging on , needs to hurry up this next 3 weeks

Started swathing Timothy. Timothy usually yield well when there’s lots of water but this year the rain came to late and it’s not the best crop I have seen.
The Timothy is right on time. We almost always swath about the first week of Aug.
Some very poor canola crops in this area because of flooding.
Wheat is likely average as long as the ground it was on didn’t flood to bad.
Early seeded oats are decent but later ones are weak and really late.
Some barley looks good and some is really poor because of flooding.
Peas look surprisingly good considering the rain. Not sure how they will yield.
I think we are going to need at least another full month to get everything mature enough for frost.

So on my ending inventories, I’m thinking farmer and most are sold out who holds for $19 and then takes 15? Ok, farmers do all the time. Reality most are out.

On July 19, grain companies held 1.26 mt. But what we don’t know and can’t get is what’s already sold out of that number waiting for ships to pick up. So ending inventories 1.4 mt. End of July. Yes, some will have harvest crops around the 15 th but most won’t for sure.

it’s a game and wouldn’t it be nice to have info? Or are we just spinning out wheels.
