Friday Crop Report – First Week of July
Rains continue across the region, though the volume has eased somewhat. If you’re in the path of a supercell, button down the hatches — they still deliver an absolute deluge.
The heat has been very welcome. You can almost hear the crops growing.
Market Note
Canola prices are rising as bins sit empty. The talk of a massive crop earlier in the season looks like it was mostly just that — talk. In a year with this much flooding, those big acreage numbers never really added up.
Crop Progress
• Wheat & Durum: Most fields are at flag leaf or just beginning to head. Fungicide applications in our area will start next week.
• Canola: Stages range from cabbage to full flower. We started fungicides on our fields yesterday. Cabbage weevil is present but still just under threshold; some of the earlier fields received insecticide. The crop was still quite wet at 3 pm.
• Peas & Lentils: Fungicides are underway or already completed on most acres. We’re seeing a tale of two crops — some fields look sick while others are excellent. A standout section at Indian Head looks like a loaf of bread with sprayer tracks between the passes. Excess moisture is trimming yield potential on both peas and lentils.
• Flax: Just starting to flower or elongate.
• Barley: There is more barley around than I’ve ever seen in this area, even on farms that don’t normally grow it. So far it looks good; fungicides will go on next week.
• Chickpeas: Not great.
More heat is on the way, but so are daily thunderstorm chances.
Have a great week everyone.
