“For the second week of June, as we head into the third week, seeding progress in Saskatchewan has essentially stalled at ninety-six percent. Many farmers have decided it’s no longer worth the risk of mudding in the remaining acres. Growers have shifted their focus to spraying operations. Most pulses, wheat, and durum have been completed, with attention now turning to canola. However, persistent strong winds have made spraying Liberty particularly difficult this week. Our farm’s wheat spraying will be completed today. We will be focusing on getting our canola sprayed. Flea beetles are a minor issue right now. The main issue on most farms is excess moisture, which is causing yellowing in certain areas of the fields. In a perfect world, farmers could manage a hundred to four hundred thousand acres. But we farm in Western Canada, where we have basically a hundred and twenty days to grow a crop. Even if you’re spreading out risk from one end of Saskatchewan to the other, Mother Nature still rules the show. So these guys that are thinking they can farm a hundred to four hundred thousand acres and make it are dreaming. Mother Nature is the winner every year. So, having farms spread out does make sense, but in years like this, you definitely will never get the whole farm seeded. And if you’re seeding the last twenty to fifty thousand acres with a harrow bar, you’re not doing yourself any justice. All you’re doing is helping out with crop insurance. The crop can still catch up if we get some heat. According to Drew Learner’s latest, this has been a very cold June and the crop is delayed. Could everyone tell us what’s going on in their particular area? We’ve been running nonstop trying to get this crop sprayed, and before that seeding was one of the shortest to get the crop in, and you only have so many days. Have a great week. Talk to you next week
Friday Crop.Report on a Thursday we have only two weeks left in June
