My Iowa Farmland Study 2025 has been published.

I believe Iowa farmland values lead those in Western Canada.

This report examines historical Iowa farmland values through an inflation-adjusted lens, combining technical analysis tools using a logarithmic scale, Relative Strength Index (RSI), moving averages, Fibonacci Retracement, support and resistance analysis and Elliott Wave Theory.

The analysis is based on the USDA NASS farm real estate values and ISU Land Value Survey (1941-2025), which converted nominal farmland values to 2015 dollars using the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) historical CPI-U data.

Are there Indian bands buying farmland in western Canada or is it just land claim settlements? Like cows and plows.

Yes the First Nations are buying land. Of course it’s settlement money. They are bidding at auction, buying off of realtor listings, and private sales. Have been for years.

How long of a lag between Iowa and western canada?

I did project in University and land prices generally followed grain prices by 2 years. I used wheat prices. It was 1984 when I wrote the paper.

Two years for Saskatchewan.

I talked about it last year and now this is year 2.

The Saskatchewan update is out next week.

I have started running some recession models. I might publish the results if I think they stand up.

Early versions, not conclusive and not consistent, but keep 2028 in mind.

Are they farming it themselves or renting it out.

Mostly renting the land back out. But there is one farm operation from a First Nation that is actually grain farming the newly acquired land. Another First Nation has their own herd of buffalo, which started with a few animals 20 years ago, but has now grown to a size where they now need to annually butcher animals to slow the growth of the herd.

Got our RM assessments on our land this week could not help but notice some of the dirt has gone up 43% in two years. Pretty sure the tax bill will follow no matter what the price of wheat or canola is.
