Finally a break in urea prices

NOLA urea prices declined significantly last week with declines in the Mar and even lower prices for April delivery. I think the high is in for this season. This lower price trend should be in time to ease prices this spring so likely time to play wait and see. I bought some urea last fall but not all of it. The price then was plenty high so could not see it going much higher for spring but the cartel has still been able to push it up. When seeding is late and it may be this year as lots of snow falling here today, I have been able to buy urea after May long for less than the price at the end of April and it looks like that will happen this year. Cheaper to buy wheat and corn than urea right now.

Curious I just read a DTN article that was written last week that said Urea was the only fertilizer that was up over 5% from the previous report. Also was talking to the neighbour who was happy he had booked his fertilizer the first of January as the price of Urea had certainly gone up in the last few weeks. I will have to call a few suppliers. Mine is in the bin but picked up a few acres and need to book a bit more.

With Urea the problem is going to be supply. IMO it’s nuts that here we are mid February and many retailers seem to have a bad shortage of product coming. I expect if one doesn’t have it on hand or have a supply specifically put aside at a retailer then it’s not going be good.

Some farmers have been very slow to book. Retailer was saying a month ago they were usually at 75% of total tonnes booked, this year was 50%, and some locations were at 25%. There are guys coming in saying they have $60/ac to spend, what can I get? And I've heard of some buying enough to put 30 lbs/ac down. That's in areas of SW Sask that have been dealing with drought for 8 yrs

Problem is that retails think everyone in western Canada averaged 65 bus/ac canola and 100 bus wheat last year lol
A few areas did but more areas did not

Fertilizer manufacturers seem to have shutdowns planned for mid season seeding. Seems odd that an outage wouldn't occur in the July - august timeframe. But I would need my tinfoil hat for where I am going with this.
