It will be interesting to see what the govt does. Pierre was against it a few weeks ago... liberals are " against " it. Even though they know of the incredible interference that china runs on so many of our systems here.

Biggest worry... what might that kumquat across the border do if its dropped?

Im willing to bet he would increase steel/ lumber tariffs and probably slap some sort of grain tariff on you.

its very much the rock/ hard place conundrum.
it seems like a good idea to drop the EV tariff ( especially because BYD vehicles are... much more cost effective for canadian EV buyers and they have a great fit in the markets where the EV sales are the highest )...but this needs to be thought thru methodically and carefully. .
im all for dropping of the tariffs but fear the backlash we may face.

However... i firmly believe that the trump doesnt have a hope to get the repubs back in power next election... so making a deal with the devil you know ( china) may be the better play. Especially when china is the big kid in the sandbox that isnt going anywhere... and US foreign trade policy changes faster than trump changes wives.

It will be a surprise if Canada will drop the EV stuff....but we have such poor leadership they may just do it. They don't know how to use a calculator and they certainly not strategic long term thinkers. It would be a mistake.

China is only offering this deal to irritate the US...therefore Canada is being played as the "Useful Idiot" in its trade war against the USA.

China is a shit hole country made up of liars, cheats, thief's, and self serving autocratic government that tortures its own citizens and hold them under the thumb. People I don't wish to do business with.

$5 billion of Canadian canola to China in exchange for a $400 billion trade relationship to USA under CUSMA that is 86% tariff free. You want to risk that for a deal with communists?

Do I need to say more?

Canadian leadership needs to get their collective heads out of their asses and negotiate a deal with USA that calms trade down.

The Canadian Government, if they want to be helpful, need to make a whole bunch of money available to farmers and corporations and coops to build their own crushing plants and get our canola that goes to China into the fuel tanks in North America, and provide cheap feed for our animal industry. The Permian Basin and Bakken shale fracking plays are wearing out...we will wake up one day and OPEC will have doubled the price of oil. What a nice thing to happen to canola and all the crushing capacity.

Canada needs the USA more than it needs China....get along and get on.

Oh the Canola longs will hate me...sorry to tell you the Chinese will still try and steal your canola in any event.

Don't be so shortsighted. Tell China to FO and get a deal done with Trump and his henchman. Use the Chinese as leverage. Canada is a huge asset to USA and economic power will eventually win out.0

It started well over a year ago. China forced the canola market down Labour Day weekend 2024. Most don't realize how old this issue is and how long its been ignored.

            True. Canola has outlets.

West central friend has spring '25 contract for maple peas at $17.50. Elevator has said it can't take them as China cancelled out. Hasn't yet said it won't take them, but if this continues, the writing is on the wall.

Please take the China offer to settle. There are only demands coming from the monster to the south.

Looks like Carney has jumped right on it, and by it I mean the taxpayer funded jet and gotten as far away from the problem as possible for a photo op.
Nothing's changed in Ottawa new face same game.

Interesting that a thumbs up can force a farmer to honour a contract but a signed contract allows a grainco to essentially walk away with any excuse.

Not an easy spot to be in. I dont envy carney here.

So what would YOU do if you were in power... decided to drop the tariff. And trump threatens all of your grain imports into the usa with a 100% tariff?

Thought Ritz had that all figured out and covered for you when he introduced Freedom For Farmers?

I expect Carney will do what Liberals always do.
Protect his voting base and do what's best for the LPC.
Then portray the west as a bunch of privileged whiners.

And as Mcfarms says, skedaddle off to some impotant world meetings and impress everyone with his knowledge about how to handle Hamas.

                      Liberal leader type stuff.
