Canola in Canada still a big premium to soybeans in the US.
Soybean futures price today converted to CAD/tonne works out to $531. While canola is $121/tonne higher. Obviously not apples to apples, with depressed meal prices and strong oil prices. But I seem to recall occasions where Canola was worth less than soybeans in the same currency. Feel free to correct me if that is incorrect.

If you want to convince average Joe taxpayer that they should subsidize our financial catastrophe, There must be some measure you can use to make a convincing argument. The price of canola being higher than before the tariffs doesn't sound convincing. Much higher than soybeans doesn't sound like a convincing argument.
By what metric can you convince the taxpayer that we are more deserving of those tax dollars than they are?

No bid on Maple peas. Yellow ain’t great. What about tariffs on lentils around the world. Maybe a huge pay out and the tax payers in the city might get the hint.

“The price of canola being higher than before the tariffs doesn't sound convincing.?“
Did you not see the price crash last week immediately after the Chinese tariffs?
the market price do pick after March but markets move on their own continuously.
what just occurred was a direct result of tariffs .

Looking at the one-year chart above. Price of canola today is higher than it had been the entire period from last fall until mid April. That is the time when we were all making crop plans.
That price was apparently enough motivation for us to plant canola this year. Right now it is worth more than it any point while we were making plans to grow it. How is that a catastrophe?

How can it be that that price was high enough to convince us to grow it. But today's higher price is so low that we need the taxpayers to save us from the decision we made when the price was even lower?
Those taxpayers might call us hypocrites considering those numbers.

I'm just not seeing the financial catastrophe.

The auto sector is subsidized and look at the price of a vehicle today.

The dairy sector is protected , milk hasn't gone down

The steel sector down east was given billions to convert to EAF that Evraz has had for 50 years.

And ALgoma is looking for 500 million due to the tariffs.

Farmers put seed in the ground every year on the best info they have. At some point maybe the government should have told us canola was going to get hit. Or what the phuck do politicians do with their outrageous salaries for only working 4 week so far this year. Making videos I don't think is real work.

                  etc etc etc.

Canola is higher today than labor day 2024 because back then the market was still trading big 2024 canola production. Reality, known now, is the crop was significantly smaller than it was though back on labor day. I knew that then but the trade apparently didn't. So that argument as a case against support is invalid. Never agree with forage, he is as wrong as chuck. However, I am not looking for a payment either, I just want agri STAB shit canned. Agri STAB is one of the three major drivers of hyper farm consolidation in canuckistan. The others of course are central bank money printing and banking industry money laundering.

And what was the basis in that time frame?
