This is a politically driven market influance
Most of us do not overextend ourselves, don’t pat yourself on the back . A few do , but the very vast majority don’t .
But again this has nothing to do whether you’re overextended or not .
We have crop insurance, hail insurance to deal with those potential issues .
No farm should bare the financial burden of poor one sided federal policies.

I don't know how you could morally exclude anyone(me) who made the decision to not overextend themselves and sock away a little bit of money in the best decade that agriculture has ever seen, bare none. In the same vein how could you send money to anyone who thought that if they became too big to fail they could keep playing no matter what happens. love it or hate it, and i hate it, the current programs for all their flaws are probably the most fair and efficient way of getting capital into farmers hands...when it is needed.

Every farm is different and have different goals and needs this bickering about who should get money and who shouldn't is exactly what the government wants, then they can just throw up their hands and say farmers don't even know what they need why should we help.
I agree sort of. It’s a little tough when government policy caused damages that were unpredictable by the farmer.

It’s interesting though, this board is overwhelmingly critical of the young, aggressive, high leveraged farmers building huge farms on dad and grandpas equity. Yet the only way that ever corrects is by hard times with no bailouts. If there are bailouts with every difficulty that method of management will not only continue, it will flourish and what’s more it will be the right way to build the most wealth. I’ll take a direct payment if it’s offered , but don’t complain when the young guy down the road pays another record price for land/rent. We’ve promised him he essentially can’t lose.

        ?

        ?
Of course the Chinese are manipulating the market , because of useless EV tarrifs to protect a Canadian EV sector that barely even exists
Your missing the point totaly by being petty

Absolutely no one will get rich off a direct payment like this , it will barely keep things afloat .
the total cast would be barely above what the Liberals have the Chinese for BC carries but some of you are worried the farmer down the road may get more than you do .
It’s a sad state of affairs to see that .
End of the day it cost all canola producers relatively the same per acre , why is that so difficult to understand ?

Between the drought and now this. Where can you get adequate protection?

phuck sakes even GARS wants a handout or some protection in one form or another.

I don't wish this on any size of farm due to political idiocy.

On March 8th 2025, the day before China announced the first round of Tariffs on canola products, Canola futures were at $627.08

Today after the 100% Tariffs on oil and meal, and now the 75.8% on seed, futures closed at $651.97.

              Up 4% since March 8th.

Are you sure China is to blame?

Which portion of the 4% increase in price is caused by China's tariffs?

How do you present this 4% price increase to the taxpayer as a fiscal emergency which they get to pay for?

I actually agree with forage on this one.

China is claiming dumping below the COP. We know the price farmers are getting what are the grain companies selling for in China and what is the actual COP?

In that event, canola dropped from a high of $616.57 before the announcement. Today's close is more than $35 higher than before Labour day weekend 2024. After all the chaos since then, we are still 6% higher than the HIGH before the original tariff threat announcement.
