    Snow

Wow Saturday was out sledding and conditions were really good, today stubble is sticking out and large bare patches showing up...disappearing fast.

Pretty much all gone here except the north facing treed hillsides. Could still get a dump of snow anytime in April or May yet though. Ground still dry as snow melt just evaporates or runs off.

Wasn't much moisture in the snow. Won't be a big delay to the start of seeding.

Today some bare patches should show up finally. I agree maybe not as much water as we thought in the snow

First morning of year it didn't freeze, rubberboots in feed pens mandatory.

Snow appeared to be deep and the piles in the yard are substantial.
One day of +6 and big bare patches and stubble showing everywhere.
No snow since Christmas so I guess that old snow did not hold much water.

My theory, ground was dry going into fall so lots of room for the melted snow to sink in rather than run off. When it's wet in late fall, the groundwater freezes and makes a lens that prevents the water from soaking in.

That and the heavy winds over the last few days would have evaporated a lot of the snow as it melted

Never seems to matter how dry it is in the fall here billions of gallons just flow to the sea.
Ground was very dry last fall with big cracks.
Maybe about 18-20 inches of snow that should translate into an inch and a half to two inches of water.
Dry in the summer that much water would never run. Frozen ground makes the difference.
