    Vaderstad

Sorry not commodity related but doubt anyone checks the machinery threads. Anyone running a newer vaderstad in heavy clay? We are looking at getting a dual shank unit but some say in heavy clay the seedboots plug easy. Any truth to that? There are also two units to choose from. One with a cast holder and steel seed boot or one with plastic seed boots. Which is better?

We are for sure going with the old style dual shank. I have dug many fields seeded by hawks and find it does a better job in heavy clay than the inline shanks.

    Thanks in advance.

In the heart of heavy clay country here, plenty of older seedhawks and newer valderstads running around ripping up the countryside including myself

R u talking about wet clay? I plugged alot of fertilizer boots in wet clay, when I was mudding it in. I've never plugged one in dry conditions

Just heavy clay in general. We usually seed with dry sugar on top but its always raw and mud underneath. I had just heard clay will be an issue from the one neighbour but regina has many running around and our soil is the same designation. I can live with plugging odd one going through a slough, but I start plugging on straight aways I may have to stick with the other red color.

We have ran a Seedhawk for 20 years with the rubber drop tubes and have not had a problem with plugging in wet clay conditions. Our new drill with the inline Dutch openers worked fine this spring also.

Depends how wide your drill is, how much product your fans are pushing and how fast you want to travel. I have an R series John Deere with the 48GPM pump. 70ft wide. Pushed 270lbs through the fertilizer runs and 30lbs through the seed runs while traveling 5 mph. Worked fine, haven't tried more. We usually put Nh3 down in the fall so we aren't pushing alot of product through the drill.

Clay builds up on seed opener and plugs the fertilizer opener in front of it?
