Calgary: Bring on Amazon . . . Maybe not the Flames

Calgary appears in be in a horserace with Denver for Amazon's 2nd headquarters. This would be a badly needed economic resuscitation for this city. Potential 50,000 jobs on-the-line reported.

But as for the Flames, the owners are likely not joking. These owners are oilmen that have had their wallets fleeced by the fallout in the energy sector. Other cities have much better stadiums, better TV ratings. Upcoming municipal elections (who will be mayor?) may be impacted. Interesting economic times for our city heading into 2018.

I don't care what sports team you like ....if you have money to pay players ....find the money to build their own stadium....

Edmonton built the oilers a new stadium and all revenue from the place go to the oilers owner.....

Brad wall and the city of Regina built the riders a new stadium and now they can't afford to pick up garbage once a week....ffs....maybe they need a rat problem like swift current.....

Most of the 1.2 million. People in Saskatchewan will never step foot in the new stadium.....but they got the bill....

Good on nenshi for standing his ground.....at least the city should have the say where it goes if they are footing the bill.

A good example how Trump's approach is turning off big companies.Canada will do well as long as he is president.

You really think Amazon would come to NDP Alberta?

Saw the flames proposal and thought it was a typical oilman deal, All rights and no responsibilities.
You pay for it and if there's profits we get them. Don't love nenshi but hes right on this one.

As far as amazon Id be surprised to see another headquarters on the west side of the continent, it'll go into the Carolinas or some other East coast location or into Mexico. I should think, why would I build in a high cost of labour and benefits jurisdiction.

Why would Amazon move to Canada when dumb **** in Ottawa will tax the shit out of them. Also, delivery here is pathetic - will take twice as long to get package 1/2 the distance.

Provinces can write mega subsidiy cheques to attract Amazon all they want. Accountants are doing the number crunching and the results will be clear.

But wouldn't it be an amazing opportunity for Calgary. That is alot of jobs, even if the estimate is over inflated. What kind of concessions would have to be given to attract that sort of thing. Cost of doing business here.... compared to other jurisdictions?

Crazy as this may sound I think the USA is looking a little unstable these days. Sadly Trudeau appears to the world as a reasonable alternative to Trump. That's short term but long term the future is murky as the rest of the world distances themselves from the USA. American isolationism will get worse the more they are shut out. Spheres of influence are changing. Once the us standard for crude is overtaken by other currencies what next? Russian wheat in rumbles?

Turdo likes BIG CORPS like himself and Nomore, Amazon is not a farmer or professional, those are JT's evil crooks. Amazon is a MONSTER! Lots of kick back to politicos...

You need to read other countries opinions of the "galavanting playboy' (taken from German news direct quote)

Trudeo is ignored intentionally he's not the kind of person who can rub shoulders with people like Putin and Merkel....

Amazon may build here they are like most tech firms liberal yahoos... However like somebody said not sure how they plan on shipping packages out unless they have their own infrastructure to do it. Would make sense to have the two HQs as far as possible separated to make it most efficient.

Along the same lines of the emperor and his new clothes our pm may be naive enough to think he is big shit on the world stage but realistically a political lightweight. His latest un showing speaks volumes of how much the rest of the world thinks of him lol. He is no Lester Pearson but trying to cozy into the role. Think he pulls these moves to appeal to his base at home. I honestly hope voters wake up and the alternative is a viable one to unseat him. I really fear we are in for another term of him. Have to get the bible thumpers out of the Conservative party. I'm gonna get flamed fml

Last week it was reported that Winnipeg was a front runner for Amazon. Winnipeg's central location along with the Centre Port development are prime consideration. (Get it? Prime?)
