Friday Crop Report on a Thursday!

Well last year at this time we finished seeding on the 30th of May and after a rather shitty start with a snow dump that added moisture to already wet fields and then working the kinks out of new drill and tractor plant 17 will come to a end early this morning on the pig shit fields. So I would have to say conditions the last week have made seeding a dream. Yesterday was the first really warm day and the wind was only at 30km.
Those little caterpillars have taken most of the trees leaf matter. Seeding for our area is down to a handful of guys. I would say the area from Regina to valley to farm is 95% done. Yes we finally have dust behind the drill yesterday on double harrowed fields, once last fall and again this spring.



Peas are up and coming not that bad. No body has sprayed any in crop yet but next week things will happen.

Hrs is up nicely and most fields look really good.

Barley is up very nice and will need to be sprayed later next week.



Canola is the one crop that is having issues. Early seeded was hit by three frost nights and took a lot of plants out, reseeding is not happening because the ground has dried out in top layer thanks to the winds. The winds on some fields have cut plants off from dust. Flea beatles are attacking real early seeded plants. Again i ask why seed canola before the 16th of may really is it worth it. Answer is easy yes three years in 10. Funny part the later seeded now will probably be up and running before the fields seeded three weeks.

Flax very few fields in our area.

Soy is wall to wall. Ok not that much but really some guys have 1200 acres or more. So the crop of choice is Soy in our area taking acres away from Wheat, Canola, and Peas.

Oats lots went in and its early.

Next week spaying season will begin in full force as early wheat and barley fields need a spray.

Since we will be done today the big guy up stairs could give the first 1 inch of rain that every farmer needs after seeding then June 30th inch and mid july a inch and august 1 inch and then thats it till october. In a perfect world that would be the plan. South of valley needs a drink real quick as fields are slow to grow and the wind has caused fields to really dry out. Drew says some showers are on way time will tell. Funny a half mile from our yard on Sunday we had a inch in a two mile wide area. Thank god were done seeding over their. Yard had a drop. Its a new year and definitely something has changed again in the weather. Are we back to a normal pattern. All storms are coming from NW down not Montana Lows.

So to those still seeding i hope the rain misses your farm and your able to go. June 5th has always been our day to finish by. It goes back to my days of Northern Fly in fishing trips. We always left on the Morning of the 6th of june so you had to be done or you stayed home. Never missed a trip. To those who need rain i hope the rain gods shine down on you.

I have one comment for all the Traders that are out their.

Crops in each province .

Manitoba is corn canola soy.

Sask is Wheat Canola pulses other now soy pulling up.

Alberta is Canola and Wheat.

Area in southern sask that is new to Canola and West side. Needs a drink and to wet areas are to wet.

Frost and wind have done a huge number on young canola plants.

Yea its a perfect world in your office. Get out in the field your Clueless.

Seeing concern starting over on Agtalk about drought and the dry conditions in the northern tier states, now that the forecast has changed and this weekends rain is being called off. We sure could have used 1/2 to an inch. Despite being so wet, those strong winds really dry out the top/seed bed when the ground is opened up.

Should make it to 45% today . Were ahead of most here . Most crop is seeded into very shitty conditions . Fert cut way back . The big one is long gone here

Just to add, that most are done planting here now, except those going back to get some flats or areas cut off, that have dried up since the first go around.

Everything is up but soybeans and they're close. I'm surprised how fast emergence was. Many of the fields seede were wet, wet,wet. MWe were concerned about soil turning hard and crusty when the top dried, and it did, but crops still popped out. A couple came up so fast we missed our burn off.

Barley has all been crop sprayed. Wheat is close. On wheat it looks like the Avadex/Roundup mix is working very well (thanks AgriVille).

Canola shows we have lots of flea beetles. But, theyre not chewing the planted canola. Volunteers are chewed on leaves and especially stems. Those striped s.o..b.s are chewing stems badly on volunteers. Even eating wild buckwheat plants to nothing. Our seed treatment this year is Visivio, and it seems, so far, to be holding them off. Many canola fields are getting some good sized true leaves.

Soybeans have had pre emerge spray including the RR2 Extend beans getting their Dicamba. We were anxious to get it on before neighbours beans emerged to avoid any drift issues.

Hay is on the short side and maturing quickly. Pastures are slow. Many producers put cows on pasture too soon around. They'll be out of grass by early July. Overgrazing everywhere. Some people,never learn.

New corn growers in this area are looking at corn though planted early, is only 3" high, and is yellow.

Area pretty well wrapping up this week. Finishing up shorthanded. Drill last canola tomorrow. Then jump on vt to incorporate broadcast canola where thedrill couldn't go. May even follow up with neighbors harrow packer bar. Wow,full circle eh?
First herbicide will be peas in a week.

Guys around here who worked the shit out of everything in the early spring and made big concrete lumps then seeded after are wanting rain. Yep same guys who wished for a drought now want rain with overflowing sloughs and muck 2 inches down.

Zero till and direct seeded crops look very good don't need any rain for awhile yet.

Finished today with soybeans. Sure thankful for the weather we have had the last month. The subsoil is still very wet but with some dry weather we had enough of a crust to seed most of our acres.
