Canada dose not sequester more carbon that it emits

The increased greening of the earth isn't reducing carbon emissions.

The levels of CO2 just keep going up world wide and Canada emits far more CO2 than it sequesters in soil and forests.

Our forests are emitting more carbon than they sequester. Increases in fires, insects and natural decomposition are causing more carbon to be released

    Follow the science!

"Canada does not currently sequester more carbon than it emits. In recent decades, Canada's managed forests have transitioned from a carbon sink to a net carbon source, releasing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere through wildfires and insect outbreaks than they absorb. When accounting for these natural disturbances, Canada’s overall emissions exceed its sequestration.

Key details regarding Canada's carbon balance:
    • Net Emissions: Canada's managed forests have not acted as a net carbon sink since 2001, as natural disturbances like wildfires have significantly increased emissions. • Forest Source: In recent decades, Canada’s managed forests have become a net source of carbon rather than a sink. • Impact of Wildfires: Wildfires are a primary driver of this shift; for example, 2023 wildfires released over 600 megatons of carbon, surpassing the annual emissions of many countries. • Persistent Misconception: While many believe Canada's forests act as a massive net sink, the reality is that the country's forests are increasingly releasing more carbon than they sequester.
