Realistically I think Canada’s failure to make a deal has very little to do with Trump’s objectives in Venezuela. Venezuela has the largest oil reserves of any country on the planet. Trump already has the majority of Canada’s oil being pumped his way, little to gain. Venezuela on the other hand has a huge resource with aging production infrastructure. The potential for growth if the U.S. can get control over rebuilding and expansion is huge. Is there risk to Canada? Certainly, Trump’s goal is economic supremacy. Canada’s goal, cutting green house gases and increasing the cost of production of our oil. Carney might have to pull his head out of his butt now.
