US will give priority to white South Africans as refugees

US will limit number of refugees to 7,500 and give priority to white South Africans

Low number represents a dramatic drop after US previously allowed in hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war and persecution

The Trump administration (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/trump-administration) is going to restrict the number of refugees it admits into the United States next year to the token level of just 7,500 – and those spots will mostly be filled by white South Africans.

The low number represents a dramatic drop after the US previously allowed in hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war and persecution from around the world.

The administration published the news on Thursday in a notice on the Federal Registry.

No reason was given for the drop in numbers, which are a dramatic decrease from last year’s ceiling set under the Biden administration of 125,000.

The Associated Press previously reported that the administration was considering admitting as few as 7,500 refugees and mostly white South Africans (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jun/28/south-africa-liberal-afrikaners-reject-trump-white-genocide-claims).

We are privileged’: liberal Afrikaners reject Trump’s ‘white genocide’ claims

As white South Africans arrive in US to escape ‘unjust racial discrimination’, many progressives feel angry at Trump’s portrayal of them as victims

Afrikaners, descendants of Dutch colonisers and French Huguenot refugees who came to South Africa (https://www.theguardian.com/world/southafrica) in the late 17th century, implemented apartheid from 1948. The regime violently repressed the black majority, while keeping white people safe and wealthy.?

South Africa remains deeply unequal. White South Africans typically have 20 times the wealth of Black people, according to an article in the Review of Political Economy.?

Wow! White south africans are the only refugees Trump wants!

His ugly openly racist policy unveils the workings of a white christian nationalist movement amongst the far right!

No doubt Trump wants to bring back segregation and take away black peoples votes with gerrymandering!

Kinda sad Trump is a racist asshole but doesn’t take away from the fact that a lot of South Africans both white and brown who emigrate are overwhelmingly educated, ambitious and conservative minded. The country is a dump now. The blacks are getting back at the whites and bringing the country down with it.

Bullshit Wilton!

The black south african majority is still a lot poorer than white south africans.

And there are a lot of social problems from the unjustified decades of a racists apartheid regime.

There is a large wealth gap between Black and White South Africans, with
Black households possessing significantly less wealth and earning considerably lower incomes than White households. In 2017, the median Black household wealth was about 5% of the median White household wealth, a disparity that mirrors the racial wealth gap in the United States. This inequality is fueled by factors such as historical legacies of apartheid, educational disparities, and income differences, leading to a country with some of the world's highest levels of inequality.

Wealth and income differences
• Median wealth: In 2017, the median Black household held only 5 cents for every R1 in wealth held by the typical White household.
• Average income: According to 2022/2023 data, the average income for Black-headed households was approximately R143,632, compared to R676,375 for White-headed households.
• Unemployment: Unemployment rates for Black South Africans are substantially higher than for White South Africans.
Contributing factors
• Legacy of apartheid: The historical system of apartheid created a foundation of racial inequality that has been difficult to overcome, and wealth was not significantly redistributed after 1994.
• Education: Unequal access to quality education has perpetuated the wealth gap. Educational performance and attainment strongly influence future income and social mobility, and there are also significant disparities in English language proficiency, which is crucial in the job market.
• Income disparity: There is a substantial gap in average earnings between Black and White South Africans. This income gap is directly linked to the wealth gap over time.
Broader context
• Global comparison: The racial wealth gap in South Africa is stark and has similarities to the racial wealth gap in the United States.
• High inequality: South Africa is considered one of the most unequal countries in the world, with inequality being starkly along racial lines.
• Concentration of wealth: A small percentage of the population, particularly those at the top of the wealth distribution, own a disproportionately large share of the country's assets.
