      Further to this...

In 1948 a report of another federal committee went even further and recommended that “wherever and whenever possible Indian children should be educated in association with other children.” That is, they should attend provincially run public schools alongside the rest of Canada’s school-age population. Ottawa then essentially froze enrolment at its residential schools in anticipation of shutting them down shortly.
And yet Canada’s last residential school didn’t close its doors until 1996, nearly half a century later. Why did these schools—now widely accused of perpetrating a genocide on Canada’s indigenous population—stay open so long after Ottawa wanted to shut them down? Because Ottawa wasn’t prepared to abandon vulnerable native children.

As painful as it is to admit today, the vast majority of indigenous children attending residential schools during the post-war period were there for reasons other than an education. In particular, the devastating, inter-generational effects of alcoholism on reserves had turned federal residential schools into a de facto native child welfare system. And had the government shut those schools down in the 1940s, as it very much wanted to, these children would have had no other place to go.

"What other past injustices real or imagined which occurred before I was born or old enough to vote am I responsible for as a taxpayer in 2025?
What about all of the recent immigrant Canadians whose ancestors can't even be associated with residential schools, which past injustices are the responsible for, and should their tax dollars be paying for?"

        A very valid question.
To which the answer is ...
        ???

Its like giving indigenous populations back their land..

I mean. Name other countried that were colonized or taken over that have given back land?

Its not really non native canadians ( basically everyone that came after the mayflower) fault that they were better at fighting and had gunpowder....

However. Reparations can and should be made. They probably shoulsve been made when the taxpayers were the ones alive at the time..
        and how much? Who knows...

Its not an easy question and no easy answers.

It is funny that in regard to taxpayers paying reparations due to govt intervention....it's basically a non starter...

But farmers want an ad hoc payment from the federal govt..due to their meddling....

        Just sayin!

I can certainly agree with that.

The rest looks a lot like an open-ended blank cheque. That opens up how many other groups to demand reparations. Families of conscripted soldiers for example, vaccine injured, forcibly sterilized, chinese and the japanese canadians, pioneers who came west to start farming based on blatant to lies by the government, etc.

                  What is, “ceded land?”
Now that the phrase is being thrown around, I am afraid we all might be targets for aboriginals. Some reserves are more militant than others, it appears. No matter how many apologies we make, we are still responsible for all their problems.

So I googled, “ceded” land and google says 95 percent of BC is on ceded land and was not legally transferred to the whites. See where this is going Eby. It seems as though we are somewhat protected by treaties as treaties represent legal transfer from natives BUT most of BC, NFLD, and Quebec are unceded. Oh-Oh. So, we don’t have to listen to Kebec.

The good thing is the older generations that grew up in open hostility and systemic and ongoing racism and had almost no education about what happened to first nations, eventually die off and are replaced by generations that were raised on the truth and reconciliation and know the history of this country including the abuse of residential schools.

Good for Moe to apologize and set a good example for those that still harbour hate and outdated views and are not prepared to work together to improve the lives of the descendants of the original people of Saskatchewan who here long before Europeans arrived.

Many of you voted for Moe didn't you?
