In January, measles was reported in a largely unvaccinated Mennonite community in West Texas. The disease spread from there, with 762 cases in Texas reported by June. That sparked a lot of coverage about the spread of the disease, which was the largest single outbreak of measles in the US since 2000, when the disease was declared eliminated. However, after 42 days without a new reported case, the Texas state Department of Health declared the outbreak over on August 18.

When we were young, getting measles was a rite of passage. We all had measles, mumps and Chicken Pox. I don’t remember any lasting effects except I remember Rheumatic Fever being associated with heart damage. The other childhood diseases were a non-issue when we were young. What changed our reaction?
