Lithium is in good supply now and prices have fallen. Lithium supply is ramping up to meet demand.
Plug in hybrid vehicles with adequate range and smaller batteries will fill a lot of the EV demand and still meet EV mandates. Most drivers in and around cities don't need long range EVs all the time. When they do, the hybrid has an ICE engine.

Just to make things clear.
My understanding of hybrids is a basic hybrid runs on battery when under 30mph with the ICE taking over when you get out on the hyway.
The battery is small so your ICE motor recharges it when it gets low.
The plug in hybrids don't recharge off the ICE?
If you run on battery for 40 miles you need to plug in to recharge?
2 totally separate systems.
You will run on the ICE motor till you can plug in somewhere?

Now the Liberals are talking about abandoning the electric vehicle mandate where 90% of the vehicles sold in 2030 will be electric. City dwellers were the consumers of electric and I can see why but will rural drivers be able to depend on electric at 40 below with a 60 km northwest wind in the middle of nowhere? Elon Musk crapped the bed on Tesla cars but TSLA shares still over $300 and rising.

PHEVs will run on the highway but you will use up the smaller battery quite fast. They are really designed for city use where they shine.
Toyota is adding more battery capacity and up to 200km of range in newer PHEV models.
They will qualify under the EV mandates. Because they give many consumers a lot of EV miles. They have highway range on gas when they need it.
All battery EVs will eventually replace ICE cars and will be the same price or lower priced. China's EV brands are already lower cost.Last edited by chuckChuck; Jun 26, 2025, 07:28.
