China’s BYD outsells Tesla in Europe for first time

BYD of China sold more electric cars than Tesla in Europe for the first time last month, reflecting an aggressive push by the Chinese automaker on the continent as well as the continuing travails of Elon Musk’s company among European buyers.

BYD edged out Tesla by fewer than 100 vehicles, according to data for 28 European countries released on Thursday by JATO Dynamics, a research firm. BYD sold 7,231 fully battery-powered cars in Europe last month, versus Tesla’s 7,165.

Despite the small margin, it is “a watershed moment for Europe’s car market,” Felipe Munoz, an analyst at JATO, said in a statement. European car buyers appear willing to embrace Chinese electric cars, which remain cheaper than locally made alternatives despite tariffs imposed by the European Union last year aimed at protecting domestic producers.

BYD’s battery-powered car sales jumped nearly 170 per cent in April, versus the same month last year. That far surpassed the pace of sales for all electric cars, which grew 17 per cent over that period.

At the same time, Europeans are shunning Tesla, which for years was the most popular brand of electric cars in Europe. Its sales plunged 49 per cent year over year in April, dropping Tesla to 11th in the rankings for the month. In the first quarter of the year, it ranked second in electric vehicle sales, behind Germany’s Volkswagen.

In Europe, Tesla’s cars first became available in Norway in 2014. It began production at a factory outside Berlin in 2022 — the same year that BYD started selling cars in Norway and the Netherlands.

The Chinese automaker is building a factory in Hungary, as well as one in Turkey, which can export cars to the European Union without having to pay tariffs. This week, BYD announced that it would establish its European headquarters in Hungary, which it said would create 2,000 jobs, including in research and development.

Over the past year, BYD has expanded rapidly throughout Europe. If its plug-in hybrid models are also included, it increased sales by well over 300 per cent in April, compared with the previous year. By this measure, it also outsold established European brands like Fiat, Dacia and Seat in some big European countries.

Volkswagen, which has struggled for years to compete against Chinese automakers as well as Tesla, topped the list of electric car sales in April, with more than 23,500 new registrations, up roughly 60 per cent.

Tesla’s sales in Europe had been slowing even before Musk, the company’s CEO, began spending millions to back U.S. President Donald Trump last year. But the backlash grew after he took up a role at the White House slashing thousands of jobs and making deep cuts to spending, including in foreign aid. Last month, the carmaker’s sales in Germany and Britain fell to their lowest point in more than two years.

Way to go Donny and Elon!

This is sure is helping bring back jobs to Texas based Tesla!

Too funny how stupid can Elon get.

It's time for shareholders to fire Elon and hire someone who has a clue! But it won't help because Felon has since January, super charged Chinese competitors growth.

tRump might have to open another full time "Tesler" dealership at the Whitehouse.

Come on down to the White House Auto mall for the biggest blowout and blowup sale of the century!

    "They even have computers!"

But would anybody by a new or used car from those crooks?

I'm all for this back to basics pattern for vehicle prices.
Ironic however, to watch Chuck gloat over evil corps being bled by even bigger corps. A local job lost union or not is still local.
No one's going to admit the level of responsibility of unions in NA auto demise.
Maybe to compete with byd we copy them before there's no competition left.

Elon made sure to give all the other EV companies a chance to get ahead in the marketplace.

EV car sales are increasing in most parts of the world driven by innovation. tRump has to pay off his oil rich supporters and at the same time sell teslers for Felon. Quite the feat of confusion for the demented Donny!

But don't expect oil rich producers to support EVs because they don't want the competition and demand destruction they bring.

That's why you got an Alberta policy to hinder the growth of renewable electricity that doesn't apply to oil and gas industry.

So why aren't they allowed in Canada??
I welcome them leaving more money in poor peoples pockets, and more oil for other products.

Please excuse chuck, his mind is short circuiting with all of the cognitive dissonance on this topic.

He wants to protect cushy Canadian union jobs in the auto sector.

He wants us to have cheap Chinese coal fired cars built with coal energy to save the world from plant food.

Doesn't want to openly admit that he would rather support the communist Chinese than a capitalist North American.

He wants Elon musk to go bankrupt and worse.

Highly amusing to watch the mental gymnastic.

Part of the reason China is building more technology type stuff is they consider industrial espionage and reverse engineering an advantage they have because they are non-aligned with any technology developers .
They say Blackberry buildings were 100 % covered with microphones to steal all the tech Huawei used to dominate industrial telecom.
Most of their EV's are knock off copies of successful models from others including Tesla.
They make jet fighters than look like F 35's but not the high tech operating system. Yet

Cheap available labor that will work all day without lifting their head. Virtually no regulatory delays.

                Could go on forever.

                They have problems too.
But they aren't the sleepy old commies anymore.
And we aren't the free enterprise Capitalist.

Trump is trying to crush Canada's auto industry. So pick your poison. He dosent need our cars don't you know!

Europe has a nuanced tariff system on Chinese imports and we are dependent on trade. If we want better access for our exports we can make a deal with Europe and China.
