Three men found guilty of mischief in 2022 border blockade at Coutts, Alta.

The three men on trial in Alberta for their roles in the highway blockade in protest of government-ordered restrictions during the pandemic have been found guilty on a charge of mischief over $5,000.

The jury convicted Marco Van Huigenbos, Alex Van Herk and George Janzen around 8:30 p.m. in a Lethbridge courtroom. The six men and six women deliberated for a little more than four hours Tuesday evening. The trio were free to leave and will be sentenced at a later date. They face up to 10 years in jail.

Justice Keith Yamauchi, prior to the jury delivering its verdict, warned the gallery to maintain decorum and cautioned he would have anyone disrespecting his order escorted out. The men’s supporters stayed silent as the jury foreman delivered the three guilty verdicts.

Mr. Van Herk’s lawyer requested the jury be polled and, one by one, each member confirmed they agreed with the decision with respect to Mr. Van Herk.

The Crown accused the three men of being ringleaders at the two-week blockade on Highway 4 at Coutts, a village on the Canada-U.S. border, in 2022. The protest emerged in tandem with the convoy that paralyzed Ottawa as Canadians frustrated with government-imposed restrictions tied to COVID blocked streets around Parliament Hill.

The men’s lawyers argued they did not direct or control the protestors at Coutts.

Outside the courthouse, Mr. Van Herk and Mr. Van Huigenbos said they do not expect to appeal the decision. Mr. Janzen declined to comment.

“Let’s hope they put us in the same spot,” Mr. Van Huigenbos said to Mr. Janzen as they hugged.

I guess Pierre Poilievre was right when he said this about a previous blockade:

These blockaders are taking away the freedom of other people to move their goods and themselves where they want to go and that is wrong and the government has laws and tools in place to combat it,

Apparently the jurors in Lethbridge agreed the law is the law no matter whether you think breaking the law is justified.

Up next in a May trial , the alleged conspirators who planned to kill cops at Coutts, Now that is some serious shit they are in.

I expect all their supporters are on the RCMP watch list.

Its time to get tough on crime!

      I agree with the ruling.
The right to protest. Not block major transportation route.
Hopefully this precedent is applied the next time trains are blocked for weeks.

Where did all the serious murder and terrorism type charges go?

Isn't mischief the same charge as Geebow walked away from numerous times?

I've got no love for cop haters but this was political manipulation of our justice system.

Could you explain ? We're laws changed? We're the jurors forced to find them guilty?

The liberals and democrat's south have certainly increased the use of the words hypocricy and virtue signalling in day to day political conversations.

Here's to wine, microphones and jet fuel forever.

The problem the coutts boys have is they did not commit the right kind of mischief , if they burned down a few churches or forests no problem , protesting oil etc they would be heroes , i also don't support blockades , but waving a few flags back then would have changed notting , and the tyrannical overreach had to be stopped

A lot of double standards to go around.
I remember shortages from the rail blockades.
But protesting in Ottawa needs protection.
The common denominator to me is JTs ineptitude. And that's a kind choice of words.

There's no "But" if you're truly against all types of blockade. You're only fooling yourself on that one.

You were right in calling them "boys" tough, any grown up with half a brain would have know the difference between right and wrong.

Where's Ab5 the Sheepie all of sudden?

Sorry, forage, I haven't been paying attention to this case. I rely on Chuck too keep me apprised of the latest news. And this is the first he has brought this up. These names sound dutch, were they among the farmers who were involved?

NFU was so proud of blocking the US border that it made their greatest accomplishment list. Members threatened Jean Luc Pepin's life, who was then Minister of Transport outside the Bessborough hotel in Saskatoon. He still shook when he told this story, 10 years later at the Canada Grain Council in 1993.

The Crow payout went from $13 to $7 to $1.5 billion. Which one of the NFU Chuck types was held accountable? I'll hold your beer while you Google...

Meanwhile in Europe...why are the Polish farmers allowed all this MISCHEIF?
The guards and police do SFA there! They agree with farmers?

Polish farmers do not allow any truck from Ukraine at three checkpoints - Polish farmers continue to block truck traffic at three checkpoints - Yahodyn, Rava-Ruska, and Uhryniv. On April 15, Polish protesters did not allow trucks to pass through these three checkpoints towards Poland at all, according to Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. According to him, the protesters also did not allow any cars to cross into Ukraine through Uhryniv. The protesters let a small number of trucks leave Poland through Yahodyne per day. Over the past day, there were 70 of them, despite the fact that this is the largest infrastructure area for crossing the border by trucks, which is capable of passing about 1,400 trucks in both directions. As of the morning of April 16, there were about 600 trucks in total queuing at these three blocked crossing points in Poland. "There are also queues at two previously unblocked checkpoints. 900 and 450 trucks, respectively. However, there is heavy traffic in these areas both leaving and entering Ukraine," the spokesman added. (APK)

So Trudeau can shut the country down for a couple years and it’s not a problem but a protest can’t restrict a little traffic?
