Here is a question. If there is no economic future in oil and gas, what will we export to pay the bills?
Good question. So you better start planning for something else just like Saudia Arabia is planning for diversification.

History is littered with one industry towns that died after the mine ran out or the market changed.

Is it good planning to think that oil and gas will last for ever? Or to put your province in a boom and bust economy?

Hell no. Norway set an example for resource revenues and the long term. Norwegians are the real deal when it comes to fiscal conservatives!

      So, you have no answer.
Do you think we can somehow export solar and wind power around the world?
I attached a chart of Canada's exports by sector. Which industry do you think can scale up to replace the 25% of exports currently coming from fossil fuels?

So what was Alberta planning to export after the gas and very expensive and dirty oil runs out?

So you are counting on oil demand to increase even when the IEA says it will start to decline.

Because even Danny Smith wants to increase the Heritage fund after successive Conservative governments mismanaged one time resource revenues.

Alberta should have had a few Norwegians showing them how to mange their money!

Would you be willing to pay a 25% VAT(sales tax) like they do in Norway Chuck2?

Mulroney the Conservative is the Prime Minster who imposed the GST.

This works both ways. Maybe what the Scandinavian countries need is some Eastern Canadians to show them how to manage Norway's resource revenue.
Send some Quebec liberals over to Sweden to enact a equalization scheme upon Norway. Obviously, Norway cannot be trusted to manage their own resource revenue, since they have readily kept it to themselves instead of sharing with their less resource endowed neighbors.

It is almost unfathomable what financial position Alberta would be in if not for equalization.

And I will never forgive Stephen Harper for reducing the gst. So much political capital wasted to enact the consumption tax. The only equitable form of taxation. Did GST alone was probably responsible for forcing the conservatives into the hinterland for a decade.
Then Stephen Harper tempted to use the reduction to buy votes. And it did not work. What a complete waste.

Actually, 14th ranked against all US states. Ontario just ahead of AL and BC lower than KY.
Collectively, Canadian per capita GDP has fallen from 6th to below 20 in the world.
Something not entirely attributable to AB.

She ain’t running out any time soon. Your great grandkids will be dancing on your grave and Alberta will be pulling oil and gas. Hope renewables are improved enough to slow depletion and pollution though.

Gee. I think Notley had 4 years to change the course from those bad old conservatives. What did she do?? Oh ya added 90 billion to the debt.

                      So easier said than done.

And how did the work out for Mulroney? Lowest approval rating in history of any sitting Prime Minister at 12%! Then in typical Liberal fashion Jean Chrétien ran the 1993 election on removing the GST and getting rid of free trade but as with most Liberal promises he didn’t follow through.

Equalization is a Federal program and is paid for with federal taxes. No money is sent from Alberta directly to any other other province.

And Albertans pay the same federal tax rate as every other Canadian. But Alberta has the highest GDP per capita because of the oversized oil industry relative to population. It sucks to be rich?
