Pea Harvests Has Began! East Sask!

Well I said I thought it was going to be back to normal and except for the geese damage it sure is.
Harvesting peas on ground we burnt black in spring are doing very very good. There was no burn off except what was done last fall desiccation. They were seeded early may into black ground and never looked back. They were sprayed once app of fungicide and in crop was Viper. I might change the viper app to something else. They were fertilized with just a base amount of S15 and inoculated with FNA liquid pea that's it. Reglone was done July 1 and they had three inches rain on them since Reglone. They did drop a bit but still a foot of product to take, but header is running just above ground. They were Meadow.
Now we are in that sweet spot that I consider back to normal. We were in the Area that was Flood zone for some 10 years so ground water did help when their was a week of lower precipitation. Some say I'm wrong saying were back to normal weather but for us on the east side of Sask I would have to say we are. Finally its good to be back.
Now I know others have not had perfect weather like the last 10 and yields are down or poor or half what they use to be. I feel bad when a area is hit by things they cant control.
All I have tried to point out is all the planning in the world and new tec. is useless if mother nature decides to F$%k with you.
Western Canada’s pea harvest has begun and yields appear to be down, according to a crop management specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says a post on agcanada.com.

“Once farmers cut into the peas they began finding yields maybe half of what they typically expected,” said Shannon Friesen.

Excess dryness in the early summer seems to have taken its toll.

“So even though things look OK at first, it seems we maybe didn’t get the timely rains (we needed) to fill some of those pods. So we’re not really having as much yield as we would have hoped.”

I have said all summer Peas are the one crop that has had the most issues with low precipitation.
Selling off the combine is probably not good unless you have contracted well over 9.
I remember how stressful harvesting flooded out peas and how angry you get at the shitty results. Be careful harvesting its just a crop and we all live to farm another day.
If you have wildlife damage phone a claim in they do a good job and cover the cost of loss.

Pea harvest started here again yesterday.
A few started last week just before rains .
Herring mostly about 20 ish . Less than half of normal . We are going to try tomorrow after tour today .
There will be the odd 40 plus which is about 80% of normal . The question is , can we hold quality now .

It still will be better than the loss from root rot last year - shit crop ins and zero pmt from gars . And grrrreens still stuck at $8 with zero delivery till maybe mid sept . I hope the buyers of greens get caught with their pants at their ankles . They still believe there is a huge carry over of high quality greens from last year - time will tell.

This is a big green pea area... quite a few were swathed before the 8 inches of rain.... they'll make feed and that's about it. The late Hopperbin ' s crop looks fantastic. 60 all day long on all his quarters. 3 seeks away though from being planted later.

Other fields going down yesterday look ok but not bumper maybe 40 ish.

Yellows around here will run 30 to 55. Closer to stoon maybe 20 to 30

Lentil yields heard from a 30 mile radius of Regina, low of 3 Bus/acre to 14 Bus/acre. This area missed all the showers until July 19. Later lentils will likely yield a bit better, but with cooling off next week could get interesting. Go lentils!

This year the later fields look better in all crops, but for the most part the peas had heat blast on the blossoms reducing the number of pods that developed to 3 to 4 pods per plant, from a potential of 7 to 9.

First field done min geese damage and only three little sloughs no flood damage. If the rest are like this our best yield ever. Their nice I'm pleased.

So SF3 congrats and good for you and your farm. I will assume that your best ever is 60 plus. Letting everyone know your yield here in Agriville won't hurt prices. I hear the trade is so short peas the traders are chewing their nails off hoping to get their cheap contracts in to fill empty waiting ships before they have to bite the bullet and start paying $10 to meet commitments. The pea crop in sask and alberta sucks bad and you are in a very fortunate.

We are filling the early contact I did last winter and binning the rest, then moving on to other crops. Lots look to be maybe upping the pea acreage next year in this area. Time will tell what looks good one year can be a shit show the next.
