Our tandem has an air shift PTO on its automatic (ultra shift) transmission for the grain box hoist. Does it matter if transmission is in gear or not to shift PTO on? I always have had it in gear to engage but don't know if I am just old school

We leave the trans in neutral. Ours is an autoshift(?)..no clutch pedal. Of course the cruise is on and engine at a higher idle to have the pump turn fast enough to develope the pressure to lift the box of grain.

No help but gives me a chuckle.
Was always griping how no one under 50 could figure out Mack 12s and Spicer 5 × 4s. Baffles me.
Then I jump in neighbours autoshift (not automatic). Took me a whole trip to figure it out.
My solve for drivers was no more tandems. Trailers with 18 spds.

We have an autoshift(no clutch) and if you don't have in gear you can hear some good noise....till it catches
