    canola seeded too light

    Help. Screwed up on my drill settings and sw arrow was seeded at 2.65 lbs/ac. It is just starting to emerge and it is thin. I was pushing rotation on this piece anyway so I could reseed to barley if I have to. I am in central alberta and the seedbed was excellant. I have to decide fast. Thanks for all input

      YOu are probably fine with the rate as long as there is an even spread of plants. Plan to spray the 1/2 liter rate at least twice, and you may have to talk to your monsanto rep and spray a 3rd time if weeds are a problem. The two problems with a light seeding rate are later maturity and reduced yields from weed competion. I have seen crop with as low as 5 plants per square yard yield over 40 bushels per acre. But it was about 1 week later in maturity.

              2.65 lbs is light but as long as seeding depth, growing conditions, and seedbed conditions (moisture, packing, proper fertility) are reasonably good, I would give the crop a chance. Maturity will be delayed by a thinner stand. Optimium weed control is essential for the crop to have a chance. RR canola should cover this well.

                  I agree with the previous replies that the low seeding rate doesn't necessarily mean a disaster. There are many cases where low seeding rates have yielded equal to standard rates. Given this late date, if you have 1 or 2 healthy plants per square foot and keep the weeds in check, your yield will still be equal or better than reseeding.

                      the stand is up and looks thin but consistent. between 4 and 6 plants per foot. heres hoping for the best. thanks everybody for your input.
