    Thistle control

Does anyone have any experience in using fall
tillage to control thistles. One of the partners on
are farm was told we should spray roundup and
then go in a couple days later with the cultivator
and work up the thistle patches. Does this make
Any sense?I personally hate tillage and just want
to spray it so we are probably going to have
some head buttiing on this one. If anyone has
some experience I would appreciate your advice.

Glyphosate is systemic so the longer it is allowed to move into the roots the better. To till is bad advice and encourages erosion and destroys the ecosystem in the soil for the winter.

Agree with wd9, as long as the thistles are still
green, you're better off spending your
deisel/cultivator shovel money on extra roundup.

If they are already browning off, there is always
      next year!

Thistles need regrowth after harvest. 6 to 8 inches if in cereal stubble, or an 8 to 10" rosette if in low stubble like lentils or peas. Don't waste your money on 1/2L rates. Good bang for the buck with minimum 1.5L equivalent or 540gms

If they aren't growing, they won't be taking it to the roots.
