What is a good Winter Wheat Variety?

I intend to plant winter wheat next August. I have never grown winter wheat before. This is on lighter/sandy land. What is a good competitive variety of winter wheat for the Sask parkland region? I know about the variety book but i appreciate some personal testimonials

I grew Osprey for a few years and was happy with it. It never winter killed, and always graded well. But I never grew it side-by-side with any other varieties, so I don't know how it would compare to others.

Am seeding winter wheat for the first time. Got some Buteau(sp) from a neighbor.Will see how it works out.Going on heavy clay soil that has not been seeded since 2009, too wet...

How do they yield? Guys seem to be talking about growing winter wheat after the CWB goes.

If you are around an ethanol plant maybe you
should consider growing ptarmigan. It is a soft
white winter that probably in my guess has the
highest yield potential. If you want a milling
wheat then you would probably do well with
Buteo.

Depending where you are at you want to check on resistance to stripe rust which is becoming a bigger issue. Radiant is variety of choice in southern Alberta but is a little later in the Parkland. We have stayed with Falcon because it stands well in our higher moisture conditions. Hopefully pricing and movement opportunities will improve post CWB.
