    Odyssey damage on peas

This year had two fields of peas stunted for 2 1/2 weeks, yellowed and leaves were half the size of the unsprayed check. Just starting to recover 3 weeks after spraying. Just wondering if this is fairly common and one of those things you accept or not. Never had no trouble before using it. It'll be a really hard sell next year. Probably just use select since its mostly volunteer cereals I'm after. Any thoughts or experiences?

We switched to solo/viper - no damage ever - yet. Plus no carry over. Yellow peas seam to be much more suceptable to odyssey damage than green in our neck of the woods. Peas under any kind of strees, cold, drought, too much moisture are damaged very easily by odyssey.

We have had the same experience as furrow some years good growing conditions everything turns out okey with the odyssey but any kind of stress seems to trigger instant yellowing. I missed a small patch one year while turning with the sprayer it made me sick all year beacause that 3 x 8 foot miss was about a foot higher and dark green, pods were fuller, I would have been better not spraying at all because the field was relatively clean to begin with likely paid to loose 1o bushel an acre.

Thanks guys just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one out there. Just like you hadenuf would have been better off not to spray. Live and learn I guess. Furrow does the solo or viper do as good of job on volunteer barley and oats as the odyssey? Thanks.

How many gallons to the acre did you spray at, and did you reduce the ammount of Merge if you used less than 10 gals/ acre of solution?

The following is directly from the BASF website, and nothing is mentioned about anything less than 10gal nozzles.

          How much to apply

          * Each case of ODYSSEY contains enough herbicide to treat 40 acres (16.2 hectares).
          * ODYSSEY is packaged in convenient water soluble Solu Pouches so you don't have to measure.
          * The surfactant MERGE® is required for herbicide activity and is available separately from your retailer.
          * Always ensure that the rate of MERGE is 0.5 L/100 L of spray solution (0.5% spray solution) for optimal performance.
          * Water Volume – Apply at 10 gallons of spray solution per acre (100 L/ha).
          * Registered for ground application only.

          For example
Acres Water Required Merge Required Odyssey Required
          40 acres 10 imp. gallons/acre 1 x 8.1 L jug 8 x 5 acre pouches

          Mixing instructions

          1. Use a 50 mesh (or coarser) filter screen. Fill tank with half to three-quarters full with required amount of water.
          2. Turn on the agitation.
          3. Add the required amount of ODYSSEY.
          4. Agitate for 10 minutes to dissolve the herbicide.
          5. After the herbicide has dissolved, continue agitation and, if using, add Lontrel for control of Canada thistle.
          6. Continue agitation and add the required amount of surfactant (MERGE).
          7. Fill tank with the remainder of the water.
          8. Use proper label rates of ODYSSEY and MERGE. Reduced rates will impact product performance.

I used 10 gal/ac just like the label says. I am definitely not going to cut corners on something worth $24 ac. Had good coverage did a great job on the barley volunteers. Had the BASF rep and prov. tech specialist look at it and they cant explain it beyond "it happens sometimes and hopefully it does more good than harm." I used it last year with no complaints on the same variety even. I'm scratching my head too. Oh well live and learn.

solo is stronger on grasses and slightly weaker on broadleaves.

DogPatch you might want to leave that Lontrel out of the mix when spraying peas. I think you copied the label for Clearfield canola.

Peas will always turn yellow when they are sprayed. If you are using a product that contains Pursuit (Odyssey, Odyssey DLX or Pursuit) then try to spray them earlier. Peas tend to yellow more if they are sprayed at the 5-6 node stage. If you spray them at the 3-4 node stage they likely won't yellow as bad.

skeller you are absolutely wrong !!! We have never had even slightly yellowed off peas the past 6 years, only on corners where the boom swings back. Do you grow only yellow peas?

You are right on the timing though.

Thank you skeller about the comment. I had just cut and pasted from the BASF website, and hadn't looked at the Lontrel.
