Feed Barley

We got some feed barley that we had in some sloughs last year. I do not really follow the feed barley market now so just looking for opinions from others on this forum.
With the pastures being so dry I would think that ranchers would be buying more feed. On the other hand with the crop being so late this year there could be lots of feed around this fall.

With 180/mt oct 09 futures I there is a significant premium of futures to cash. This contract represents barley in store Saskatoon. Anything trading within $30/mt of that in Sask? Future cattle prices do not support $4.00 barley here or in the USA

Would be cautious in using western futures as a market signal - very limited volume and open interest. Changes coming to this contract starting the march (move from Saskatoon back to Lethbridge).

Not sure what to tell you on feed barley pricing. Lots of challenges and unknowns ahead for both industries.

NEW WESTERN BARLEY FUTURES CONTRACT
effective Monday, June 22, 2009
o Current Western Barley futures contract months from March
2010 onward to be delisted immediately. July09, October09,
and December09 to remain listed.
o New contract to be listed under the same contract symbol
(“AB”) for Trade Date Monday, June 22, 2009for contract
months November09, January10, March10 and subsequent
contract months.

Did you consider going through the board? I have heard right here on this site they are the best choice!

$200 Deliverd Lethbridge is a reasonable target if worst areas remain dry... But not worth getting cute if it gets within $10 of that. Wouldnt wait until fall. Frost is a serious risk and would be heavy on feed grains if it happens.

along the MB SK border we are buying at $3 FOB farm. Mills in MB are buying for July and Aug already and getting some covered. If it stays late, they will be waiting for all the frozen wheat and barley this fall. There are lots of farmers holding signifigant amounts on the farm that was not selected for malt, and enough of them shopping around to keep the buyers from getting too panicky.
