Friday Crop Report – Second Week of October
Harvest went well up until last Saturday, when canola moisture spiked to almost 13%. It dropped back to 12% on Sunday, but then a rain mist moved in along with a snow threat. We didn’t get any snow, but we did get rain.
A lot of guys in our area finished on Friday. North of us, harvest is still going.
Overall, harvest ground to a halt on Friday. The dryer guys managed to keep going Saturday and Sunday, but the wheels fell off yesterday with moisture climbing to 15.4%.
Saskatchewan harvest is sitting at 86% complete, but the real grind starts now. Days are getting shorter, mornings are frosty, and there’s always the chance of rain or snow — it’s October.
HRS and Durum
Most is done, except for the guys who left wheat to chase canola and now have tough wheat to deal with. I’m hearing a lot of farmers say they didn’t harvest a bushel of dry wheat. It got close, but nothing came off dry. If you’ve got quality durum or wheat, tell the elevators to pound sand. Feed is a different story. Our yields were decent, but not our highest ever.
Oats
Most are harvested. What’s left is a tough grind. Oats are lighter this year.
Barley
A few odd late fields remain, plus some late greenfeed that froze yesterday morning. The first major frost cooked most plants.
Flax
Just the odd field left. Saw a guy trying to burn straw yesterday — more smoke than anything.
Canary Seed
Harvest is mostly done. It’s slow going if you still have some out.
Lentils and Peas
Done for most. It wasn’t a very good year.
Chickpeas
Done. Looked not bad.
Canola
Still the major crop left to harvest. Swaths are wet now and need wind and sun — which is coming today through Saturday. Later-seeded canola seems to be the better crop, with yields increasing as we head north. Very early seeded did okay. A lot of it traces back to the wet June, then 40 days with no rain, followed by a wetter, cooler finish. No bumper crop — just average.
Cattle are getting moved, bales are being hauled, and fence lines are getting cleaned up. Snow geese haven’t arrived yet, so we might still get a few more weeks of decent weather.
I’m hoping to be done next week. We’ve got nine quarters of canola left.
