Friday crop report, first week of October.
Funny how the weather flips the moment October shows up. It has done that in Western Canada every year since time began.
Something is lining up for this weekend. Canola that went in late is only now coming off, and a wet system is on the way. That is not the setup for a strong finish. If it stays wet to the end, canola production could come in well under what a lot of people have been talking about. So much for a warm, open winter.
Harvest had a good week. A lot got done, and a lot of farms are wrapping it up. Saskatchewan should hit about 75 percent done today, but north of the Yellowhead and through the east is likely well behind that.
Hard red spring and durum are basically finished for most. A lot of guys went back to late wheat, or wheat they had parked so they could take canola dry. Wheat never really got under 14 percent moisture for a lot of farms this fall.
Canaryseed is getting cleaned up, along with flax. Oats are done for most. Barley is down to the odd field. Swathed barley did not fare well, and standing heads broke off on the windy days.
Lentils are cleaned up. Pea ground is worked or harrowed.
Canola is the crop still coming off. Mornings it is running about 11 percent with a bit of wind, and by the end of the day it is down around 8.8. A lot of wheat harvest got missed because the canola is twisted, lodged, and up and down. It is a slow process. We have under 18 quarters left, but it is a grind. Seams like a lot are seeing the 6 to10 bpa below normal.
Pastures are emptying out and cattle are moving. Bales are getting hauled. Ground moisture is back to full. Water is not the problem it was earlier. Fall work has started for most as they get finished.
Tell us about your area and how it turned out.
Happy Thanksgiving we always celebrate the Usa one since I only attended maybe three in all my years farming because we're usually never done by Monday.

They went west this year instead of east the last few years. Just beans left to combine hope to be able to start today. Pens to clean out start with the driest first and go from there working some of the drowned out spots in fields.
