Friday Crop Report — Thursday, first week of September

Harvest is crawling. Rains are back and only a few guys are getting anything in the bin. Nothing here was ready, so it’s spray, spray, spray.

Carney: get back to negotiating a deal and just shut up.

Crop Report

Harvest is inching ahead, but hailstorms took more crop this past week than the combines did. Heavy rain here. South of us a big storm ripped through from Abernethy to Neudorf — crop’s gone. Piss-all left. Salvage and next-year country. Other areas got similar destruction. We’re not adding yield anymore. We’re losing acres.

Province is sitting around 13% harvested. Next week looks extremely wet starting Sunday.

Pulses

Lentils and peas are still coming off, mostly lentils left. Yields aren’t good. A lot of plants, or whole fields, are dirty with poor seed set. Peas did well on ground that hadn’t been peas recently. Lentils are showing the usual excess-water, tight-rotation, last-lentil problems. Pulse check-off chasing new growers isn’t a strategy. Give us the check-off back and maybe you’d get the message: research, and fast. Fields are flat after the heavy rains.

Barley

Early fields look good — plump, heavy, 52 lb. Zero chit so far. Malt quality is there; price sucks, what else is new. Anything after next week is feed.

Oats

If it’s swathed, today’s rain will push it down and next week will be worse. A few early fields are off — no bin-busters. Later fields still look a bit green and better.

Flax

Getting shut down. Doesn’t look like a high-yielding year.

Durum and spring wheat

Some fields harvested or just started. Early durum looks nice and is yielding well — maybe handled the heat better than spring wheat this year. Spring wheat looks like an average-to-above durum crop, I think. Not enough off yet to call it.

Chickpeas

Less than a handful look okay in our area.

Canary seed

Looks good, but wind and rain lodged a lot of it.

Canola

Getting sprayed or swathed. Lots of guys swathing for the first time in a long time. White mold did a huge number on some of the heaviest canola in our area. When a swath looks big but you can put your foot through it, that tells the tale. Average to below for our area. None harvested yet, but close.

Pastures will like the rain. Hay fields will like the soil filled back up.

Have a great clean-the-shop week. Mother Nature can be a bitch when she wants to. Markets are down they don't care about you.

Well the 3rd hailstorm for this area rolled through last night about 10:30. Luckily not much at my house, but heavier to the south and west. Rain ranged from 1 inch to just under 2 to the west. 14 day forecast looks very wet, I don’t see any harvesting being done in the next 2 weeks. This mornings job is surveying the damage..

Tried wheat yesterday, tested 15.2, in hindsight should have combined it. Decided it wasn’t ready, wrong decision. Weather forecast was for showers, 2-4 tenths.

Wheat tested 17.5 yesterday at 5, half hour later showers started, 3 tenths as of this morning. Yields on wheat are 30 to over 60. Protein, according to elevator agent running 9.5 to 15.5. Barley 70 to 80 bushel and most is destined for feed. Not many will play the malt game. Very little canola off. Shop time for a bit but luckily we run older equipment so lots to do. Haha. Still having problems with the cougar, pro tracker that has been hired said he feels there might be 2 here. Not afraid of human activity or scent. Has spent the last month dining on lamb, this has to end so attention is being given to this endeavour also.

There was a year in the last 30 that we sat the entire month of September. The elevators should be emptied out by the current delays. And Vancouver and Thunder Bay should be begging for grain to feed a hungry world.

This liberal country phucked away a decade to build for the opportunity for Canada to regain its reputation of a food supplier to the world.

We sent money to Ukraine instead of building our ports.

We also got down to 17 in durum yesterday, put a few acres in the bin (120 acres) before it got tough. This morning the rain gauge barely shows anything, maybe half a tenth last night. The ground is barely wet so hopefully we can take another swipe at harvest 2026 today. Don’t step on any spiders and Stay Safe our Agriville friends.

Just talked to neighbor with lots of lentils, durum and Canaryseed - they are half done, an hour left in durum and only Canaryseed to do. They combine about 3500 acres.

The 7 th looks ugly for water. Down right nuts for rain. The nutrient guy had that a week or so ago. Drew today has munday insane.

Started spraying wheat yesterday but windy today so that’s on hold. Have had canola swathed for eleven days and yesterday was warm and sunny so tried a sample and it was to damp to test.
Old equipment here also and there always something that needs fixing.
Forecast is looking like a typical September with its never ending showers and rain.

Battling the last section of lodged durum. Everytime it gets dry enough to put on air a shower pops up. Hopefully peel the rest off tomorrow then just standing Canola to the finish line way off in the distance at this rate.

haven’t turned a wheel in a week 3.2 inches since sunday night. water in fields. yards are a mess. two more inches on way monday. october better be warm and dry.
