Friday Crop Report – Third Week of July
Most guys have parked the sprayer and are waiting for the next problem to show up. Rain has quit in some areas and the heat is back in full force.
Ag in Motion wraps up today. It was good to run into quite a few followers and friends out there.
Here’s the report from our area:
Hay
Baling is well under way. Most places are probably up about 10% over the last few years. We weren’t dry, so it’s a real boost.
Pastures
Pastures are starting to show some signs of needing moisture, but there’s still lots of grass.
Hard Red Spring & Durum
Fungicide spraying is all but finished. Some wild oats got missed or came later in a few fields. A bit of spray stunt is showing up too. Most is in the filling stage.
Canola
All over the map — from cabbage stage to full flower to finished. One or two fields out there are fully podded, but they were probably just volunteer that never got seeded properly. Cabbage weevil is gone… or was it ever really an issue? Canola hates these 28+ degree days and yield is being taken. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Lentils
Ugly, nice, and awesome — sometimes all within a three-mile stretch. Second spraying is going on, or guys are just waiting, or they’ve quit.
Peas
Looking great and tall everywhere, from finishing up to just getting started. Same story as lentils — ugly, nice, and awesome in the same three miles.
Flax
Doing okay, but there is way less of it this year.
Canaryseed
All over the map from nice to just okay. Not that many fields around.
Barley
Barley, barley, barley. It’s showing signs of heat stress pretty fast and ranges from great to just okay.
This is the week of high water use, and heat like we’re getting takes grain.
