Friday Crop Report – May 23, 2026
Markets are under pressure again. Sometimes it feels like we’re supposed to farm in a perfect world — but we’re not. Between AI-driven speculative trading and real-world weather chaos, I’m genuinely concerned we could be heading toward tight supplies and potential food shortages sooner than most people expect.
We’re dealing with drought in some areas, frost, major seeding delays, floods, and late snow. On top of that, the current super El Niño pattern isn’t helping. Seeding finally restarted today after another stretch of wet/cold weather — that’s nearly a full extra week of delay.
Total.rain so far in may 1.5 in rain and two snow events or three. I'm not counting as all its doing is making us go.roind and round. Mud is a dud.
Provincial Progress:
Seeding has reached 24% overall, but the North and Central regions are significantly behind.
• Early-seeded canola has taken a hit from recent frost.
• Peas and barley are going in, along with some wheat.
• At least one grower switched from wheat to canola yesterday.
• Land rolling is in full swing today where conditions allow.
I personally need until at least June 5th to get everything seeded. Anything later than that starts getting risky.
Would love to hear from others — what’s seeding progress like in your area?
Stay safe out there and good luck to everyone pushing through these tough conditions.
Oh I opened up the lake and went to peavy mart in Yorkton. I'm happy a few are back.
