Friday Crop Report on a Thursday week two is done in April.

    Good Morning,

Looks like maybe I should have stayed away another week. We’ve got a snowstorm and rain event rolling through today.

I signed into Drew’s Crop Aid podcast late this morning. The main thing I caught was: when it’s go-time in Eastern Canada and Manitoba, go — don’t waste time.

If anyone caught the full discussion, what did he say specifically for our area north of the Valley in Eastern Saskatchewan?

Seeding has started in southern Alberta and some southern areas of Saskatchewan.

North of Highway 1, drills might be out in yards, but many areas still need more time.

North of the Yellowhead, it’s still full winter.

I’ve never seen this much water in the spring from snowmelt. Every dugout is overflowing, and sloughs will take a long time to go down.

    One funny observation:

Why can I travel from Texas through the Midwest — even Montana — and then cross into Canada and immediately see sloughs and poor drainage? Glaciers didn’t create a straight line at the border. In Europe, you don’t see this kind of situation.

Is this our useless, pointless drainage jealousy at work?

Wheat is up again, just like I said it should be. No one in the world wants to spend big money growing a crop that pays minimal returns but is used everywhere, like bread wheat.

Fertilizer and fuel costs could wipe people out this year, especially with a minimal crop.

We’re seeing wall-to-wall canola. Is that for crop insurance reasons? It seems like the only crop penciling out in dry areas.

Peas — if we don’t get a monsoon, is this a year not to lock in prices?

Lentils that are two years old in bins — do they still come out looking great?

Mustard — with a company planning to introduce a competing crop, what are the ramifications?

I’m leaning toward making no more sales for now.

How bad are the shortages in Australia — diesel, seed, etc.? Will that impact their crop? Probably yes.

I hate snow. Did I mention that? And we still have lots.

Heading out to more spring meetings. Looks like some companies have cut back farmer specials this year.

Crushers are making insane money on canola right now and all winter. Did China actually buy any, or was it just Carney MOU sleight of hand?

Have a great day. Off to a meeting, then lunch at the farm.

Seeding for us will begin around May 5 th to 8th. Is my prediction now. One more spring storm and who knows.

Ground not warming much this morning in central Alberta. -10 and snow. More south and west I believe, only a couple inches here so far. Very few if any sloughs here. We had some water running for a couple days, that was it.

My sister just arrived from Australia. Diesel was $3.50 a litre, then the government removed fuel taxes, 25-30 cents I think. She did say supply has been an issue with stations running dry. Fertilizer a big concern as planting occurs in July she said. I think that varies by area, Landdownunder can correct me. My sister is in Canberra, LDU in the Maillee, which I believe is about 1200 kms west of Canberra(Can be corrected on that).

There certainly does seem to be some optimism in the wheat market. Countries like India could have wheat yield curtailed by expensive Urea, time will tell.

Just back from Ireland. Getting fuel, especially diesel was a problem, more so in the rural areas. All stations were out as we travelled on Sunday.

Government logic. Lower the price to solve a shortage of supply.

I'm sure that will help ration demand...

Yeah sick of snow and winter. Still a couple of feet in the fields. Will be 4 weeks before anything happens here.
Three more years, last kid will be done school, and then I am getting a winter place down south.
New equipment costs continue to exceed any income realities.
