Diesel aftertreatment provides ZERO benfit to the user aside from a reduced threat of ban from those who could care less if it disappeared. The benefits are very much a "public good", but yet all the costs are incurred privately.

If *I* see no benefit, then why am I paying for its maintenance under threat of fines or imprisonment if i get rid of it? Perhaps warranties should be eternal, and gov't should be paying thr cost of maintenance? If the benefits are difuse, then surely the costs should be as well. Have to wonder what that line item on a gov't budget would look like?

"Dilution is the Solution to Pollution, but only in areas where you are able to dilute the pollution. Us in AG out here in bum phuck nowhere it isnt going to be an issue. Those in populated areas with a slug of diesel engines burning it can be a problem..."

Smog isn't even a problem in the bowl around LA.
You can see to the horizon flying in there now.

They used to call this a chase for declining zero.
They can measure a smaller amount so that's the new target.

But why do we need a new crusade?
Because the one we were chasing had no chance of being achieved, so change the target?
      Are we that stupid?

Thanks for the clear description...yes each solution created a problem, last being UNRELIABILITY! Costly stressful!

So someone please explain WHY Iveco can accomplish same with ONLY DEF, that is easily deleted, returning engines to a 1995 state?

Is it patented so all the rest are emissions crap nightmares?

Lots of industry shut down, moved out of cities or to other countries. That has helped clean the air in most cities but people hate trucks and being stuck in traffic so the pollution card is still being played. I thought they where using DEF in Toronto's public transit system but my daughter said that's just the smell of urine

Personal experience with Def systems on equipment doesn’t impress.
New to me 2017 Case ih 9240 combine. Was already deleted when I bought it. This antifreeze leak shows up on the left side halfway down ahead of the engine. I climb down between the engine and the grain hopper. Start taking off protective covering. Turns out there is a hairline crack in a formed coolant line that runs from the engine to the Def injector on the muffler, then it does a 180 goes down under the engine to the Def tank(to heat the Def tank) and then comes back under the motor and back into the motor. I repaired the hose with a couple of brass fittings and 3/8 heater hose. If it leaks again I will eliminate it. Second issue on my Case ih 135 loader tractor. Gauge on Def tank quits working, says it empty when it isn’t, tractor will only idle. Still under warranty. Mechanic comes out, diagnoses. Orders part. Took about 4-5 days. Warranty covers parts and labour not travel. $350 bucks for 2 calls. New part didn’t work properly. Kept reading 100% full. Had to put in a second part. Keep in mind the sensor is part of the heating coils for the tank. I am sure would be over $1000. Travel covered this time because new part is faulty. Also my loader tractor stored in a heated shop, Def never freezes. Damn lucky I had bought an old low hour John Deere 6410 last year so my cows didn’t go hungry.

              Iveco smarter I guess?
red dealers say delete it anyway.
Green guys say remove it and all hell will break loose when you need a tech or try to trade it in.

Even IF, your DEF emissions system doesn't give trouble, there is still the cost of the DEF fluid and associated pumps and handling equipment.

Realistically it's not IF, it's when and how often and is it still on warranty?

I would say for sure Furrow. Just a terrible tax on of us. Gift that keeps on giving to the government.

I have never understood the logic behind having something burn hotter on a combine for emissions. Just creates another spark starter.
