Thanks for your explanation, I was aware of that before I asked the question.Originally posted by LEP View PostEconomies of scale are important. More acres spreads out your fixed costs Forage.
While bigger acres does improve efficiencies in many areas, as size grows another layer of management causes a bump in labor costs. ... Until acres grow to even it out.
So cost reduction is not a straight downward line but kinda bumpy.
Tens of thousands of Canadian farms out there and not one of them are the same when it comes to the balance sheet.
That's why I asked the question, how can a random statement be made that a 5000 farm is losing $30.00 an acre more then a 100,000 acre farm.
There are black and red balance sheets and different amounts being made or lost per acre no matter how many acres are being farmed.
Here's an interesting statement I found that maybe Blaithin could confirm if true, not sure of her status
I notice that you didn’t talk about the research that shows differences in gender in marriage happiness levels. Marriage is generally GREAT for men, who report being far happier in marriage than being single. Much research indicates the reverse is true for women. Single women report being happier, in general, than married women are.

Some of the highest margin and almost always profitable are what are referred to sunset operations.
The ones who are still active farmers, sometimes community leaders, who are not actively expanding and will farm mostly owned land with well maintained equipment.
Have a crop deferred, a crop in the bin, and a crop in the field with inputs prepaid.
Sometimes hold a crops like flax for multiple yrs waiting for that price peak they got once.
Their neighbors are all waiting for them to quit because they can't see why they keep farming because they don't need the money.
Everybody knows at least one.
Might have a few here.
Forgot to add, forage and I can't be the only ones here that think we hit the jackpot when our wives picked us?
I don't like going shopping with my wife because it takes so long with people we hardly know giving her hugs and telling her how good she looks.Last edited by shtferbrains; Jan 19, 2026, 10:37.

Like some people like being their own judge of how much land they need(want), I'll be my own judge of how much money I need( want)!
shrfrbrains and forage, do your wives read AV? Nuff arse kissing for now, save that for the bedroom!
I better go visit my neighbor in the hospital and get off this slippery slope....
Have a good day folks.Last edited by farmaholic; Jan 19, 2026, 08:30.

I've seen a bumper sticker, a bad day of golf is still better than a good day at the office.
That sums up how I feel about married life. In spite of the trials and tribulations, the worst days of married life are still better than the best days when I was single.
