My Conversation with John De Pape

In this insightful episode number 4 of The Trent Klarenbach Podcast, I sit down with John De Pape , a true "original gangster" of the grain industry.

Having followed his work for over 30 years, it was a privilege to dive into his extensive career, from his days as a grain merchant at Cargill and a floor trader on the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange, to his role in designing the new canola contract and leading market investigations.

John shares fascinating insights into his current initiatives, The Trading Floor and the Advanced Grain Pricing Program, both aimed at empowering farmers with a deeper understanding of market mechanisms and trading strategies. We explore the evolving landscape of grain marketing, dissecting topics like basis trading, price transparency, and the historical impact of the Canadian Wheat Board.

John's perspective on market efficiency and fairness, and his dedication to educating farmers, truly resonated with my own mission.

This conversation is packed with valuable lessons on how traders approach the market and why it's crucial for farmers to adapt their marketing strategies.

He is the kind who will be replaced by A.I. That is the new frontier that will be used to formulate decisions.

Hey Agstar77 - it's been a while. I guess by your logic, the CWB would also be replaced by AI (if it still existed). (At least it wouldn't be corrupt!) But in reality, I am actually using AI - it's not smarter than me (yet), but it sure has made my workflow easier.

        Yeah, AI isn't there yet.

        You will be fine, John.

Could you tell us more about the "original gangster" part, or should I ask A. I.?

Apparently all it means is I’ve been around a while. I guess I can accept that.

              Yup

              OG

It's what all the cool kids call someone they respect who has been around a while.

I just re-read my post. What part of it do you find funny?
                  - CWB replaced by AI - logical, using your logic. Not funny.
                  - I'm using AI - yup. Not funny.
                  - AI not smarter than me - it's not. It makes more mistakes than I do. Seriously - not funny.
                  - CWB was corrupt - yup. And not funny at all.

Funny that you still think your relevant. Funny you mentioned corruption. Didn't you work for Cargill? How did that go?
