Friday Crop Report on a Thursday, week 3 August.

My god this summer went by way too fast. Saturday morning might end the season, but I need a few more weeks to get safely to the finish line. Most with second growth and cooler summer also need more time.

Blocking pattern is setting up and that massive hurricane in the Atlantic isn't helping.

A shitty year is just that a shitty year.

To all who got hail last night and in some of the recent storms, Mother Nature is so cruel. Just days from harvest should she takes out good crops. Never shitty ones. Lots of lost acres lately are getting taken out. Brooks, battleford, langham.

Big yields just keep getting bigger according to grain companies.

Ever figure out why the big four grain companies never say farmers are getting screwed real bad by the tariffs Ottawa they need help.
Nope, they double the basis and let the market destroy the price but their profit keeps going up.
Most suppliers and buyers aren't your friends.

Moe's big announcement was a joke, everyone knows that road needed to be built in Yorkton. Today we have the federal Ag minister in Saskatoon. Wow, I bet another loan or something for the crushers. **** all for farmers hurt by Ottawa's stupid ideas.

    Crop report.

Wheat is getting shut down on early seeded fields, heads are good but thinner. Durum is a week behind. Some early wheat will be harvested across the valley this weekend. It's an average wheat crop for us nothing more. Can't get a massive with tenths all summer.

The pea and lentil harvest has started but is just getting going in the last few days. Quality and yield are ok. Pea price sucks shit as once China said tariffs the companies buying said profit and dropped them by a couple of dollars a bushel. Lentils downgraded will also see a price drop.

One company that told us since spring that they weren't buying peas are now back, they see profit.

Flax is turning or burning but it's ending its run. Yields will be down.

Canary is turning and some will be sprayed soon.

Barley is getting harvested the last day or two and ours should be in the bin by Sunday night. Yield on early is good but not massive. Later looked ok since the rains but late. Green feed needed a rain two weeks earlier. Malt is a joke and so are the prices.

Canola is the crop that is major for our area. I have my largest seeded Canola crop ever. Spent lots on this crop and it will be average at best. Late seeded look good to awesome but will they get by this weekend (frosts) to make decent results?

More ugly than great in Saskatchewan. When every one knows who has a massive one in a couple RMs compared to the rest, you know its not great. In our area there are three sections one north of Balcarres, one by crosswait, one one by Tullymet Park. That's it in 6 rms.

19.4 but if it freezes 18.2.

Pasture loved the rains and so did some hay fields, a second cut but not that great.

One update we finally got our first big rain Sunday on 45 quarters 2.10 in. So now our driest farm is the wettest and our wettest looks dry. Heavy dirt did better this year.

So if you had hail we all feel your pain, every farmer has been their it sucks. Its like running a marathon and dropping a hundred meters from the finish line.

Please send your crop report for your area and results, stay safe and enjoy the harvest we don't get to do it again till next fall.

    Pig shit needs more time.

Yes Saskfarmer summer flew by. Certainly a much better year this year than last. A cooler July with just enough rain to keep things growing. Rains in early August have given us green pastures which we haven’t seen in August for 4-5 years.
Crop certainly looks average to above. Pre Harvest applications on early seeded barley started about 10 days ago, on wheat 5 days ago. First barley combined on Monday was seeded late April, it was Esma barley with above average yield and bushel weight. Those who waited until May 1 to start seeding appear to have heavier crops.
So early seeded barley, combining will be finished by the middle to end of next week. My barley seeded after May long won’t be ready for pre harvest until maybe next weekend, very fortunate with how it looks but not in the bin yet. Wheat probably similar time frame, there has been some later tillering which is making harvest farther away.

Most canola crops look really good. We were very dry last year so a much better year this year. Canola is starting to turn, will be looking at swathing the first canola next week. An average canola crop around here is 45-50 bushels per acre, if the weather holds this crop in our area will be above that.

Peas in my area have been desiccated or are about ready to be. None combined in my immediate area, will start in the next day or 2. We do have a few fields of flax in the area. Stating to turn.

Lots of second cut hay and green feed cut in the last week. Second cut on new hay looks really good, older hay a little light. Overall just keeping my fingers crossed that weather let’s us put it in the bin.

Even though I’m out of this game, I still look forward to reading your Thurs report.

We moved off the farm and now live on an acreage just SW of MJ so get to see some different farms and what goes on in new territory. Crops for the most part are going to be average to above. The thing is what average is to one is above to another. If you are getting an average crop of say 50 canola for yourself that is considered above average in the trade.

Lots of lentils off here .. yields are massive reds 40-55, small greens on one massive operation 60.

I was a believer if the crop was big, start selling early. No use waiting for the slow increases down the road. Guaranteed it will drop faster and take more time to recover. Pay bills and any leftover make some interest on it. Not saying sell everything but on this kind of yr of what i would call slightly above and average crop move some. Also, with the uncertainty of everything in the world with trade, prices are will be affected by that.

Hope everyone has a good safe harvest, at the end of it all your families are the most important. Believe me now that I’m done I’m spending more time with mine, even though they are grown up you really appreciate the time now with them. Like all farmers we are so busy take no time to appreciate anything but a big crop, because that is what we all strive for. There are so many more important things in life.

        Have a good wk end!!

The apprentice was struggling with work life balance the other day.
I told him to listen to Cat's in the Cradle. Better now than later with regret.

See... im the other way.. i farm because it allows me TO enjoy the time with my family.
sneak home for lunch.. home for bed times as much as possible... work with my pops and good friends. 90% of the time work doesnt seem like work.

We arent a big operation, by some standards, but big enough that none of us need to work a 9 to 5
( which i believe is the real time stealer.... kids going to daycare so parents can work ...is the opposite of how life is meant to be)

Winter? Do what you want... haul when you want.. hire a trucker if you dont want. Work on things when you want...

            Its a nice life.

As for the crops, up here around edmonton its a REAL mixed bag. Crops 20 miles east are pure junk. 1.5 inches after seeding until early august.

Northwest the county declared ag emergency while half was underwater.. other half droughted out. Amazing to see the difference this yr. Nobody has started on much.. few pea fields getting looked at closely... bit of wheat getting pre harvest weeded.. canola will start to be swathed late next week.

Crops are good... terrible..and everything in between. Like any other yr i suppose but it will be interesting to see how canola varieties handled the drought. So far our invigors look like they do NOT like the stress... while the dekalbs ( RR) flourished.

            ???????

Getting regular texts with grain prices slowly creeping upwards. Guessing the grain cos. have figured out that the crop not as big as they kept saying it was. Say a few peas south of here combined but they got shut down by the daily rain. Crop on my farm mediocre if we can get it. (daily rain) Most of the crop was shutting down by early August and has now had more rain since then than in the grow time. One field that had more moisture early does have nice barley on it. Hoping for 80-90 on that which is good for solonetz. Expecting a bit better than last year overall but last year sucked.

Ok, I have a question on canola. One variety this year is going flat as a pancake and it doesn't matter drought, heavy rain, or wind etc. I'm trying to find out which one it is.

We all know Invigor gets bad sunburn and can fool you on the timing of shut shutdown.

One field by wadena is so flat and twisted its not even funny. Yes that spot had heavy rain.

                Back spraying wheat today.

                2000 acres done.

Frost Saturday to Monday morning is possible.

                What a year.

                Big Ag meeting about canola.

Lots of song and dance and no substance.

                Farmers mean nothing.

Theyll get it sorted out. At the end of the day they need to stop chinese manipulating the canola market. How to do it? Unsure.

The sad part about it is that BYD electric vehicles would be an incredible fit in the 8 large cities in canada ( toronto, montreal, vancity, calgayree, etown, winni, saskabush)

If they did drop the ev tariff and we imported some... i imagine they would sell promptly and be a great fit for those who utilize electric vehicles.

I dont believe canada currently builds any evs here??? Could be wrong..

There’s nothing too exciting going on around Regina. You only see a tiny bit of combine dust on the horizon with only Peas and lentils being binned. The dry July heat seared the yields into the 30-35 bushel zone for green lentils. There are lots of green, green fields around. Much of the durum is 2 weeks away and Canola combining is out there too. This is late for this area as August rains revived growth instead of turning off the tap. It’s scary as we see predicted temperatures in the 4 degree zone when we need a couple of hot, dry weeks. Good Luck everyone and stay safe. We’ll get to the other side, one way or another. The past few years we are nearing the finish line by labour day, not so this year. I actually saw some farmer pulling an antique, rusty batch grain dryer on the by-pass yesterday. Hmmm, what’s that guy thinking?
