Good morning. The first combines are rolling in lentils, and the first wheat seeded in the area was sprayed on Monday.
The year of the tenth continues for our yard with 2/10 from last Friday till Sunday.
But last night a powerful storm went by us and gave the yard another 2/10. So far now in August, our yard has gotten 6/10. But our best area is just north of town and east at 1.5 in and now our worst at 1/4 inch is just west of town. Still not one rain this year on any station over 7/10.
Canola is the hot topic as day three is here and Carney still isn't talking. We are a huge industry bigger than the suro and not a peep.
Crop report.
Hrs and Durum changing colour after showers and filling. Some small kernels will not plump up. Lots north of the valley next week will shut down the wheat. It's time 110 days. Yield potential looks similar to last year for our area. Not a massive crop but an average to maybe slightly above.
Barley that was seeded first days of May is turning shd heads are now sideways not down yet. Early is thinner than late, feed seeded really late is very poor and growing again. Malt prices suck so maybe move to the feed market or quit the game because the maltsters don't pay for a great product. China will buy feed to make beer if it's low enough.
Corn in our area for feed looks ok but it needed a good rain in July. Hard to grow big corn on tenths.
Oats, burnt and white spots are showing up on later-seeded seeded. One week earlier looks better, really late needed a big rain in July.
Flax is filling and turning, wont be a big crop, maybe a bit below average.
Lentils are desiccated and next week combines will roll. Yield could be good in our area because we were dry, less disease on heavier ground. Peas are getting shut down and a few fields are still hanging on green. My seed half needs a few days yet. Harvest will begin in some oeas ths weekend. Only two elevators buying so price sucks.
Canola the stepsister to soy is having a rough summer. From growing conditions to now bugs in some areas. Canola needs water in July for massive yields. We didn't get so a average crop to maybe slightly below. Yield for Canada in Canada is 19.4 mt. the elevators talking 21 mt are playing with you. Remember they pay for crushers off your cheap Canola. Harvest pressure us on and then China nails the crop because they are mad at Ottawa over Ev.
Pastures still need a descent rain and it looks like a few will get a second hay cut on newer fields. Hay production is down in our area this year.
So a quick round up. Yes some got bigger rains looks like 1.5 in for most but we were in the eye of the system all weekend at our yard.spreading the farm around instead of all in one area does help out in a piss poor summer rain year.
Off to the Assinaboia area to look at a few tractors. Found a 6030 Deere but the guy won't sell it. Did find a 4620 with a 8820 motor in our back yard, might get this tractor for pulling. New hobby next year. You always need a hobby other than farming.
Share your area and who had the massive rain or hail. Slow-release moisture sucks.
Have a great weekend and stay safe.
Had a demo this week. It's nice but expensive.
Sand ridge has a bit if a crop, well straw.
