What costs more - CROP R&D or machinery

Caught my eye that Macdon has improvements to their headers .

SO what costs more?

R&D for crops

OR

Machinery to harvest low hanging crops.

Why doesn't the R&D into crops have crops that are producing higher off the ground?

Or is it fun to wreck equipment and buy new to harvest crops?

There was, still is , a big push for shorter crop varieties
all good and fine until droughts happen .
Farmers weed demanding it many years ago
there are taller varieties but vast majority not interested

As far as costs , both are extremely high, not sure who’s the winner there
