Make Summer fallow great again. aka: 2025 seeding intentions.

Around here seeding plans will be mostly wheat with some barley. No current plans for canola other than holding carryout. Half of last falls inventory is unpriced. I will also cut back on seed rate and fertilizer as well as reduce coverage due to less on the line. My land is variable so will top dress areas with higher potential. Could summer fallow a small field for '26 crop oats. Savings on fertilizer combined with wild oat control could make that strategy improve overall margin.

I have a lot of residual fertility from last seasons less than stellar crops. It will be basic fertility and less canola for sure. Also have variable terrain which doesn’t favour dryish years. Was planning on trying peas but $9 isn’t too enticing.

Had an 85 year old tell me yesterday a good year to summerfallow.
Sure wish my fixed costs aligned with those in his mind.

Trying to pare back as much wheat as possible with specialties like bly oats or peas. Not that simple here.
Disease on peas, poor soil for barley and resistant wild oats limit flexibility.
Best chance for slim margin by crop still canola here and assuming peas have a market this fall. No bids now.

Couple of droughts on the planet and continuing wars could make that canola you spilled over the side of the truck after dark next fall worth more than you think. Think positive guys.

Don’t forget to pencil in 2 years of fixed costs those Oats have to cover. That is always what the smf supporters always forget in the equation

Even if I sprayed half our land twice with roundup and then worked once in the fall. And seeded half.

All we would do is accomplish nothing.

Ok half would be ready for canola the next year.

I usually have a piece of sprayed out and worked up grassland. Seems a pain let alone going back to summerfallow.
