    Pulses vs wheat

On the weekend Farmgate T.V. show had two reps from the pulse industry talking about issues effecting them. One of the bright spots is the continued development and release of both new varieties and new crop types. CDC saskatoon needs to be commended. At the same time we see a wheat industry strangled by rules and regulations. The message is clear. The wheat industry continues to live in the past basing it's future on what has historically been successful. The problem with that is in today's world things happen so fast that by the time you perceive an opportunity, it may have already passed you by. Producers need flexibility and options. If we can't predict the future with any degree of success we need to build the tools necessary to adjust and adjust quickly. There is a reason Canada has a very successful pulse industry. Someone had the vision to think outside the box.
