When I set out on this adventure, switching from primarily cattle to primarily grain, I budgeted for 1 crop failure in 3. Historically that wasn't an unreasonable expectation. We are in the hail belt. We nearly always get too much rain at some point ( or throughout) the growing season, consecutive droughts such as 02 and 03, we often don't get enough heat units, spring frost, fall frost, early snow etc.Originally posted by blueversi View Post
Absolutely. An older former farmer that was forced to quit before he wanted to told me when I was first starting out lucky to get 2 decent crops in 10. The latest round of propaganda in the industry hooked another generation into feeding the system. Look you can be your own boss, easy credit get whatever iron you need, sit back and let the autosteer and the crop consultant do the work while you Tweet out how good you have it.

I consider every year that doesn't end in complete disaster to be a win. And I still spend accordingly. I still assume we will have back to back failures.
